$173,000 in fees sought in RI prayer banner case (AP)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? Lawyers for the 16-year-old Rhode Island atheist who sued over a prayer banner displayed at a public high school are asking a court to order the city of Cranston to pay $173,000 in attorneys' fees.

The request was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Providence by lawyers retained by the Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. The lawyers sued Cranston and its school committee on behalf of Jessica Ahlquist, a junior at Cranston High School West.

Earlier this month, a judge ordered the removal of the banner. The school committee has not decided whether to appeal the ruling.

The ACLU says Ahlquist is entitled to $25 in damages. The group also says the $173,000 request does not cover all the time spent on the case.

Getting That Number 1 Google Position. | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

If you haven?t yet automated your article submission, it can only be for one of three reasons:

1. You don?t want or need any additional free visitors to your website, because you cannot handle them,

2. You missed my previous articles, or

3. You still haven?t realized how powerful and incredibly valuable this system is. that is, how much this will dramatically increase your sales

If you fall into the 1st. category, then please move on to the next article, as this one simply doesn?t apply to you.

Otherwise please take a moment to read this article carefully, as it really could make the difference between success and failure to your online business this year. You see, people love to make things complicated, but making money online is actually really simple. Whether you are selling your own product, promoting affiliate links, or making money from Adsense or ?click flipping?, it all boils down to just two things:

Conversion and Traffic.

Conversion must come first of all. You need to have an offer that people actually want. That offer could be a product, or an attractive advert (e.g. Google Adsense) that people are compelled to click on. And you need some kind of presentation (such as a sales letter) that encourages them to take the action you require such as to buy the product or to click on the advert.

In many ways this is the easiest part. Most people can put together a half decent website or sales letter that will make at least some money from their visitors.

But then, of course, you need visitors. Busfuls of them. The more people that you can get to come to your site, the more money you will make; especially if those visitors re highly targeted. But, given the number of websites online: all competing for the same visitors, just how do you get more visitors to your site?

Well, there are just three ways that people come to your site:

1. Visitors type your URL straight into their browser. That results from some sort of off-line promotion: it might be your business card, a radio advert, an article in a magazine or a conversation with a friend.

2. People click on a link somewhere. It might be in an email they received (eg from a friend or from an ezine they subscribed to), or it might be on another website they have visited.

3. Or they search in a search engine like Google, see your website in the listings, and then click on the hyperlink to go to your website.

And that is it, period. There are no other ways for them to get to your website.

So, knowing that, how do we get more traffic? Easy:

1. Advertise your Internet presence in all your offline promotional materials.

2. Get lots of people to put links to you on their website, and lots of people to send out emails with your links in them.

3. Get a top position in the search engines.

Mmm.., it sounds simple, but maybe it is not so easy. Just how do you achieve steps 2 and 3 without spending loads of cash or getting banned by the search engines?

To understand this, we need to think about how the search engines work. Again, it is much simpler than people say.

Search engines want lots of people to use them. To achieve that, they strive to deliver relevant and up-to-date content to people who do a search through them. But how do they determine what is relevant to your search?

There are really only two ways they can do that:

1. They scan your website and, using very sophisticated algorithms, they work out what the subject matter of your website is. The also look at how new or old it is, how recently it has been updated and so on. These are all known as on-page or on-site factors. You have direct control over many of these factors when you set up your site.

2. They ?consider? what other people write about your website. In doing that, they look at two factors: how many people have links to your site (and what those links say) and also how important are the sites that link to your site. An important site of ?authority? that points to you is worth more than a whole list of unimportant sites. They also consider how old the links that point to you are, and a number of other factors about the value of the link and the context in which it is used.

At the same time, the search engines are constantly on the look out for websites that attempt to fool them into thinking that they are more relevant or more popular than they actually are. Which is why the so-called ?black-hat? techniques quickly lose their effectiveness.

So, to get to the top of the search engines you need to do two things:

1. You can optimize your on-page factors: there is plenty of information on- and off-line it about how to do that. It is not difficult but, on its own, it is also not enough.

2. Get lots of high quality, one-way, relevant links to your website from as many other websites as possible.

So, how do you get people to link to you?

1. Produce a fantastic site so that others just really want to tell others about your site.

2. Pay people to link to you ? buy a text link, or offer an affiliate program.

3. Exchange links with them ? but reciprocal links are clearly not worth as much as one-way links and it is a lot of work to do this effectively.

4. Provide them with fresh, unique content that adds value to their site in return for which they agree to post a link back to you. Loads of sites are constantly looking for fresh, unique content. They get this content by hunting through article directories, or by subscribing to article submission services.

So, if you send out articles to such directories, your articles will end up both on the directories themselves, AND on the niche sites that pick up and use our articles. AND some of these are likely to be valuable ?authority?-type sites. Of course it depends on the quality of your article who picks it up.

So, as you can see, this last method is the simplest and most powerful. It gives you hundreds or thousands of one way back-links, from relevant, niche sites, all for free. All you need is some way to get a different, unique, article to each of those directories and ezine publishers. Which is, of course, exactly what our software does.

But wait a minute! It doesn?t stop there. The real power behind this method comes when you use it regularly. Preferably at least once a week. Imagine getting 200 to 1800 new permanent one way links every week! By the end of a year, you could easily have 50,000 or more relevant, quality, one-way links to your site! And you can connect the submission process to a timer to put everything on autopilot!

That is the real power of this system?s software and that is why it beats every other traffic generation and SEO system out there.

So, unless you don?t have an online presence at all, isn?t it time you harnessed this power for your own business? Click on our link below now to get the early-bird discount and get a fantastic bunch of bonuses:

North Dakota state Rep. George Keiser, right, R-Bismarck, pauses to look at Bella, an Italian cane corso, just after taking literature from Bella's owner, Charles Tuttle, left, after a news conference at the North Dakota Chamber of Commerce headquarters in Bismarck, N.D., which was held by a number of groups opposed to a proposed North Dakota constitutional amendment that would abolish property taxes. Tuttle favors the amendment, and after the news conference, he distributed copies of a study that concluded the amendment would be beneficial to North Dakota's economy. (AP Photo/Dale Wetzel) Abolishing North Dakota's property taxes would end local control over projects and services and drive up state sales and income taxes to make up the lost revenue, the proposal's critics said Wednesday.

Stocks rise on manufacturing data (AP)

U.S. stocks had a big January, and they're starting February strong, too.

Stocks climbed Wednesday after strong manufacturing data and encouraging reports about the Greek debt crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average closed within 100 points of its post-2008 financial crisis peak.

Factories raised output in January by the most in seven months, according to the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index. And the Commerce Department said construction spending rose 1.5 percent in December, the fifth straight monthly gain.

"This is a market that is hungry for good news, and when it gets it, it responds very positively," said Alan Gayle, senior investment strategist for RidgeWorth Investments.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 83.55 points, or 0.7 percent, to close at 12,716.46. Earlier in the day, the Dow was up 151 points. But it moved less than 100 points for the day for the 20th consecutive trading session.

The Dow's highest close since 2008 is 12,810, in April 2011.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.68 points, or 0.9 percent, to close at 1,324.09. All 10 categories in the S&P 500 rose. The biggest gainer was financial stocks, up 1.6 percent.

The Nasdaq rose 34.43 points, or 1.2 percent, to 2,848.27.

On Tuesday, stocks wrapped up their best January in 15 years. The Dow gained 4.1 percent. Investors are less worried about the European debt crisis, and earnings at American companies are generally meeting expectations.

"It doesn't take good news" to make stock prices rise, said Randy Warren, chief investment officer for Warren Financial Service. "It just takes an absence of bad news."

For U.S. and European companies, the price-to-earnings ratio, one measure of how expensive stocks are compared with profits, had been at low levels that assumed the worst about Europe.

"These are Depression-era valuations, and something has to give," Warren said.

Plenty can still go wrong. Greece faces a euro14.5 billion bond payment March 20 that it can't pay without additional help. Greece and the International Monetary Fund said Wednesday that negotiations to reduce Greece's debt should wrap up within days, raising hopes that it can avoid a default.

In the United States, monthly hiring figures from private payroll agency ADP were so-so. ADP said private-sector employment rose by 170,000 in January from the previous month. That was 10,000 fewer jobs than expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

ADP also said December job growth was smaller than it previously reported ? 292,000 instead 325,000. The government releases its report on January job creation Friday.

Investors also looked past a cautious outlook from temporary employee provider ManpowerGroup. Its stock jumped 14 percent after fourth-quarter profits came in much higher than expected.

But the company said that while hiring may increase this spring, the European debt crisis could slow job creation. It predicted lower profits in the current quarter than Wall Street had expected.

In other corporate news:

? Amazon.com fell 7.7 percent after its quarterly net income fell and revenue growth was slower than Wall Street had expected.

? Whirlpool rose 13.5 percent after higher appliance prices raised its quarterly profit, and it said it expects shipments to increase as much as 3 percent in North America this year.

? Health insurer Aetna rose 3.1 percent after reporting a 73 percent jump in fourth-quarter profit on smaller expenses and lower usage of health care.

? Carmakers reported strong U.S. auto sales for January, with gains at all the big companies except General Motors. Privately held Chrysler's U.S. sales surged 44 percent, and it reported its first annual profit since 1997.

In Europe, British stocks rose 1.9 percent, German stocks 2.4 percent and French stocks 2.1 percent. Earlier in Asia, stocks didn't have the same momentum. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 edged up less than 0.1 percent, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.3 percent.

The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury notes rose 0.029 percentage points to 1.832. The euro rose slightly to almost 1.32 against the dollar.

Oil prices fell after reports that U.S. crude supplies rose last week and energy demand remains weak. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 87 cents to end at $97.61 a barrel in New York. Brent crude rose by 58 cents to finish at $111.56 a barrel in London.

New HF/E research identifies impediments to efficient password creation and provides design strategies for enhancing the user experience

Internet users are increasingly asked to register with a user name and password before being able to access the content of many sites. In their upcoming Ergonomics in Design article, "A Passport to UX Design of Password Practices," human factors/ergonomics researchers Soolmaz Moshfeghian and Young Sam Ryu identify impediments to efficient password creation and provide design strategies for enhancing the user experience.

Because there is no standard method for setting up passwords, each Web site employs its own set of requirements and restrictions. After investigating the pros and cons of design-related features of the requirement and restriction practices of 90 popular Web sites, the authors found that more than half the sites failed to display password guidance prior to the first attempt. Users may receive multiple error messages if their chosen passwords do not line up with system requirements, which can lead to confusion and frustration for the user and increased operating expenses for system administrators.

The authors offer a number of recommendations for Web designers seeking to improve the user experience: Provide users with password requirements prior to their first attempt; use clear and concise language to communicate the password requirements; present, at a minimum, length and character requirements; and avoid placing password requirements in the entry box.

"This study helps us gain more insight into the current state of password practices and helps create more intuitive and empathic interactions," said Moshfeghian. "Intuitive password practices lead to increased user trust and thus user sustainability. In short, the optimal goal is to humanize interfaces, make them as intuitive as possible, and bridge the gap between users and interfaces."

Enhancing user experience through effective password practices can have many benefits. A more user-friendly registration process may produce a larger number of successfully registered accounts, which can translate into increased sales and a more recognizable brand. Fewer failed registration attempts can result in reduced system maintenance, security, and password recovery costs.
