Will Apple?s latest patent replace pinch-to-zoom?

Apple patents absolutely every idea the design team has, even if it?s never going to make it to market. Sadly, we?re living in a day and age whereby if it?s not done, other companies can happily ?innovate? exactly the same thing. The latest is an interesting one. Since Steve Jobs? famous ?boy have we patented it? comment regarding multi-touch on the original iPhone, pinch-to-zoom has become the industry-accepted method of enlarging images and web pages. Samsung has tried an unusual ?two fingers and PIVOT!? approach, which leaves you looking at the edge of your phone instead of the screen. It?s safe to say, that method isn?t the best.

But, what if your phone knew how far away your eyes were from your iPhone? Imagine if it had built in sensors of all kinds that controlled the image or text size on the display to optimize for that distance? That?s what the most recently uncovered patent suggests. As usual, the patent was uncovered by the sleuths over at AppleInsider:

To me, it sounds a bit of a nightmare. Possibly because I?m imaging that every time my phone moves, it takes a few seconds to readjust what?s displayed onscreen. But, if it is used, I?m sure Apple would find away to make it a really smooth and pleasant experience.

What do you think? Do we need to rethink pinch-to-zoom? Or is it the best way to control image/text size? Tweet me: @TiP_Cam
