Carry Your Computer Desktop On A Simple USB Key With Keepod's ...

We may live in an era of interconnected information that even allows us to store data “in the air” using cloud technology, but we still often struggle to keep track of which computer or flash drive has the document we are looking for. Keepod delivers a solution for free: Turn your flash drive into your PC.

After creating the Keepod; a computer card with its own Operating System (OS) that can store all your digital information (from credit card data, to your desktop layout), Keepod Ltd now offers the Keepod’s OS on their website for free download.

The Israeli startup, based in Italy with a branch in Bnei Brak, Israel, realized the inconvenience of having a different computer desktop (and, hence, different documents and folders) at home, at work, at your parents’, and so on. By offering Keepod OS 12 for download, you can carry around a desktop “designed to jump between PCs” on your USB flash drive. This will allow you to access the very same desktop on any computer. (By being a closed system, you don’t leave any trace of your activity on a PC after using your Keepod OS on it).

“We specifically designed the concept of Keepod to run from a USB drive knowing that it will be dropped and spilled on, lost or stolen. It needs to be treated for what it is –a piece of plastic. All of the data on it is saved and stored in a highly secure manner. If something happens to it, no worries. Get a new USB drive and within minutes you are ready to go,” says Nissan Bahar, CEO of Keepod Ltd.

Carry your PC in your wallet

Since 2010, the company has been developing the Keepod, a small yellow card with a USB connector, designed to break our dependency on specific personal computers. By containing its own OS, you can access the exact same desktop layout by plugging it into any computer, “be it a Mac, a PC, even a wreck with burned-out hardware,” Keepod’s Managing Director, David Chouraqui, told NoCamels.

By offering Keepod’s Linux-based OS for free download, Keepod are getting ahead of the game and breaking the dependency we could develop on the Keepod card. If the aim was to break free from hardware, the Keepod, yet another piece of hardware, couldn’t be the ultimate solution. Now, all one needs to do is download Keepod OS 12 and install it on a flash drive of at least 8GB.

Since storage space on a flash drive might be scarce, Keepod OS allows you to store additional data in the Keepod Cloud.

Breaking free from hardware

But a portable OS was only one of the Keepod’s breakthroughs in its battle against hardware; even by offering its OS for free, the little yellow card will still be useful to carry around: thanks to its incorporated smartcard, the Keepod can be used as a credit card; a public transportion voucher; and even as a digital key to open the door to your office; or even to operate the vending machines at work.

As information spreads beyond physical limits and more people can watch our activity or track our digital footsteps, a closed OS for personal use might be just what we need to safely store all our private information.
