After Gary Ross, director of?The Hunger Games, passed on directing the sequel,?fans were curious to know what he would choose to direct instead. After all, The Hunger Games?grossed $685 million dollars worldwide. What else could compete?
Now comes word that Ross? next film adventure will lead him to never never land, as he is now confirmed to be directing Disney?s?Peter and the Starcatchers.
According to?Deadline, Gary Ross lost interest in the last film he was attached to ? The Secret Life of Houdini?- and is now fully focused on the Pan?prequel. Though the film has yet to be budgeted and is waiting on a draft from?Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family), Ross hopes to start production on the film by 2013.
The?original?story of Peter Pan, as written by?J. M. Barrie in?Peter and Wendy,?has been retold through countless interpretations. However,?Peter and the Starcatchers?is a prequel to the classic tale, adapted from the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson.
Peter and the Starcatchers?is set on the high seas and follows the adventures of an orphan named Peter aboard a ship named Never Land. Filled with pirates, thieves, treasures, and a ravenous crocodile named Mister Grin, the story features many colorful avenues that Ross could explore.
Earlier this year, two different?versions?of a one childhood classic were released within months of each other -?Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman. The films tones were drastically different, as?Mirror Mirror?was laced with a PG-rated comedic essence, while Rupert Sanders??Snow White and the Huntsman was very dark and gritty.
And yet they were still subjected to comparison because they shared the same source material. This is especially relevant because Sony is said to be working on a movie called?Neverland, using?J.M. Barrier?s tale as its guide,?with?Warrior writer and director Gavin O? Conner at the helm. It?ll be interesting to see if both Peter Pan films are released around the same time and if they?ll be subjected to the same sort of comparison.
If all goes well,?Peter and the Starcatchers?will begin production in 2013.
