Newlyweds Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton won a pair of trophies and Taylor Swift was honored for video of the year at the CMT Music Awards on Wednesday night in Nashville.

None of the top winners was on hand to accept in person, although Swift ? who is on tour ? appeared via satellite to express her thanks for her award for her "Mine" video.

Lambert won the female country video award for "The House that Built Me" and Shelton got the same honor for male video for "Who Are You When I'm Not Looking." Trey Fanjoy, who directed both videos, was named director of the year.

Shelton also won in the new category of best Web video for "Kiss My Country Ass."

Justin Bieber got the collaborative video award for "That Should Be Me" with Rascal Flatts, while Lady Antebellum picked up the group video award for "Hello World" and Sugarland was named for best duo video for "Stuck Like Glue."

Book reviews for the comic lover's soul ? The Idler

Book reviews for the comic lover?s?soul

Posted by Kate Sloan on June 9, 2011 ? 3 Comments?

I?ve been noticing things getting more graphic. I see comics everywhere?on billboards and the subway and nerdy girls? Adrian Tomine tote bags. There?s an entire section in a local comic shop devoted to graphic versions of the classics. You can read Jane Erye in word bubbles, friends. That shit has been drawn and paneled. Suddenly high school lit is a little more interesting for those strange souls who don?t adore Dickens as much as I do. It?s the best of times.

In third grade we had to write reports on books we took out from the library. We had two options: We could write something out in the dreaded cursive or we could work with the nice folks in the library to type and illustrate a report as a book. I was one of the Midwest?s most dedicated 8-year-old pterodactyl enthusiasts. I checked out books almost exclusively set in the prehistoric era. I owned two copies of The Land Before Time. And I wrote a book all about dinosaurs and their ways called Paleontologists and Me.

I guess what I?m saying is I started the trend of graphic book reviews. You?re welcome, fellow Americans.

The Barnes & Nobel Review hosts a monthly column called ?Drawn to Read,? which is what this column would have been called if it wasn?t already taken. The column is illustrated by Ward Sutton, whose work has appeared in such lauded publications as Esquire, The New Yorker, and Rolling Stone, as well as other lesser known outfits like The New York Times.

Sutton?s ?Drawn to Read? provides short illustrated book reviews of both fiction and nonfiction books. The images and text capture the feel of the book the way a perfectly executed cover or book trailer might. A recent review of Disaster Preparedness: A Memoir by Heather Havrilesky is a particularly good example. It seems silly to explain in words what Sutton does graphically to a book composed solely of words, so take a look. It?s the NYT Book Review for the comic lover?s soul.

Last week I noticed another site I love, The Rumpus, is also featuring graphic book reviews. A recent review by Kevin Thomas, a self-described unemployed former film critic, covers Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones. The review appear as part of Horn! Comix Supplement, the archive of which can all be found here.

Are there other graphic book reviews I?m missing out on? How do you feel about illustrated reviews of literature? Are you a slave to the NYT?s Sunday Book Review? Is a graphic novel of Othello the comic kid?s equivalent of cliff notes or just plain awesome? I might have to read an illustrated classic to find out.

Judge to Copyright Crazy Lawyers: STFU and Stop Wasting My Time [Copyright]

?Judge to Copyright Crazy Lawyers: STFU and Stop Wasting My TimeRemember that mediocre and wholly forgettable action film, The Expendables? Probably not, because of the two aforementioned adjectives. But 23,322 illegal downloaders were targeted by the film's legal team?an endeavor a judge is now calling bullshit.

Ars reports Federal Judge Robert Wilkins told the crew at Dunlap, Grubb, and Weaver that their case was "inexcusable." Why? The attorneys demanded expedited subpoenas for the 23k+ defendants?most of whom weren't even living in DC, where the suit was filed?and then didn't do anything with them, wasting the court's time in the name of copyright intimidation. "The Court finds it inappropriate and a waste of scarce judicial resources," barked the judge, "to allow and oversee discovery on claims or relating to defendants that cannot be prosecuted in this lawsuit." So, basically, stop wasting our time with your efforts to recoup money on a shit movie, law firm.

Just more proof that IP scare tactic ninnies are just that. [via Ars, Photo: Shutterstock/Rafa Irusta]

Illustration: Jesse Lefkowitz

Illustration: Jesse Lefkowitz

Love don?t come easy, and sometimes the seduction process needs a little assist. Fortunately, help is out there if you know where to look. Here?s a selection of apps for that.

  • Facebook WaitingRoom
Lets the people on your ?to stalk? list know that you are out there, patiently waiting for them to be single again.
Also good for: Reminding people on your ?to stalk? list to quit procrastinating on that restraining order.
  • Urban Signals
Users of this iPhone app list their likes and dislikes on their profiles for people nearby to see.
Also good for: Confirming that you have the hippest playlist on the number 5 bus.
  • The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed
Written by ?Mystery,? the book encourages douche-y tactics like the neg and peacocking.
Also good for: Getting fired after you tell your boss that you saw another boss wearing the same outfit.
  • Grindr
Smartphone app that helps gay men find nearby dates.
Also good for: Any app that gives you the option to ?Load More Guys? is good for only one thing.
  • The Art of Seduction
Robert Greene?s book suggests you use ?the demonic power of words to sow confusion? to seduce unsuspecting ?victims.?
Also good for: Persuading people to give you money, power, the philosopher?s stone?whatever you desire.
  • A Good Joke
If you can make someone laugh, you can make them do a lot of other stuff, too.
Also good for: Pretty much anything. Did you hear the one about the duck and the monkey?

Dell's prototype 7-inch tablet touts slide-out split QWERTY keyboard (update: just a concept)

Whoa. Every so often, a giant in Round Rock pokes it head up above water long enough to put forth a truly mesmerizing design, and while it's no Adamo, this is most definitely the freshest take we've seen on tablets in a very, very long time. The gallery below showcases a prototype that's lounging around within Dell's top secret labs, a 7-inch slate that's adorned with a slide-out keyboard. Said keyboard, however, is hardly typical -- it's rocking a split-key design that's not at all dissimilar to the virtual layouts recently showcased within iOS 5 and Windows 8. So far as we can tell, the entire alphabet's present and accounted for, and there's a rear camera that'll be more than happy to make your child's next birthday party a bit more awkward. Outside of that, we've no other details to pore over, but it's safe to say that we'll be doing our darnedest to change that. Oh, and if you're doubting that this thing has a future as a real-deal product, there's a shot just south of these very words showcasing what looks to be a commercial / press render. Delicious.

Update: So it turns out that these photos were actually taken by Tweakers, who met up with the crew from Dell's Austin Design Center to gaze upon this prototype tablet earlier this week. Tweakers says that the concept is about three to four years old, and it eventually led to the development of the eccentric Inspiron Duo. Unsurprisingly, Dell also confirmed to us that this device will never make it to the market; but of course, there's still the Streak 10 Pro Android tablet to look forward to.
