The Mark of Spark- Wire markings

The Mark of Spark- Wire markings Chelan and Quincy Home Inspections

Wire shmire, yeah? yeah? yeah. It all can carry the juice (electricity) right?

Well it can but there are many different types of wires and they are marked to designate what and where the wires can be used.

Here we have some wires that are being sent to a detached building (like the conduit and conduit termination, that?s another issue ; ).

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Wire feed to detached building Wenatchee Home Inspection

Most homeowners choose to run the electrical feed underground to detached buildings. The two most popular methods are direct burial cable or PVC (plastic) conduit. Direct burial cable is designated as UF (Underground Feeder) or for larger sizes, USE (Underground Service Entrance).

I think it is much better if you run the electrical cable in a conduit. The conduit not only protects the cable from damage from rocks and stones or from trees on top of the cable's route. A conduit?(if properly sized) also provides you with the convenient ability to upgrade the service to the outbuilding, should you require additional power in the future.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?NM-B used underground Quincy Home Inspection

But what we have here is NM-B wire. NM-B cable is the most common form of indoor residential electrical wiring. The ?NM? stands for non-metallic. This wire cannot be used in an underground application or in a wet/damp location.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??
Wires have many different marks such as THHN or THWN ? These letters represent the most common types of individual wires used in residential applications.

The letters represent the following NEC requirements:
T: Thermoplastic insulation
H: High temperature (usually 75?C when dry or damp)
HH: Higher temperature (usually 90?C when dry or damp)
W: Moisture resistant (usually 60?C when wet)
N: Nylon jacket

Other marks you may see:
R: Thermoset insulation (rubber or synthetic rubber)
X: Cross-linked synthetic polymer insulation

So what we have here is an improper feed to the detached building. We have wires that are not properly protected and designated for a wet location. This can lead to degradation of the wires and potential physical damage. It?s time for old Sparky to make a house call.

2013 Screenwriting Challenge | Write Your Screenplay

screenwriting-challenge

Begin Your New Year WRITE!

With My 5th Annual

2013 SCREENWRITING CHALLENGE

Why The Challenge?

Let?s face it, the holidays are a brutal time for writers.

We all do our best writing when we get into a rhythm. But during the holiday season that rhythm can be impossible to maintain. Schedules get jammed with Christmas parties, gifts to buy, family visits and a little too much vacation time and the next thing you know you haven?t written for a month.

But that?s not the real problem. The real problem is starting up again.

Ideally, writing would be part of your daily routine. As natural as brushing your teeth, getting dressed for work, or drinking your morning coffee.

But for most writers this is rarely the case. Many of us write in fits and starts, waiting desperately for moments of inspiration, and spending most of our time beating ourselves up when that inspiration doesn?t come. And then, just when we get started on a rhythm, something happens to interrupt it.

I?m always amused when I participate in writing panels. Invariably, an eager young student asks a question about building a life as a writer. ?What real writers do is write? insists one panel member after another, striving to out do each other as they speak of their unceasing dedication to their craft.

Having worked with writers for most of my professional life, I know the truth. It doesn?t matter if you?re an Academy Award Winner or a first time writer. Most of what writers do is NOT writing.

What writers really do is PROCRASTINATE.

Writers are brilliant at finding ?important? tasks to interfere with their writing. Set aside a couple hours to write, and suddenly those dirty dishes start to call to you. The next thing you know you?ve cleaned your whole kitchen, scrubbed your shower tiles to a sparkling shine, reorganized your closet, updated your facebook photos, and still not written a single word.

You?re furious at yourself. But at the same time, a part of you feels like you didn?t have a choice. Time just got away from you. ?I?ll write for twice as long tomorrow,? you reassure yourself. But tomorrow comes and four hours seems like an impossible amount of time. Even if you do manage to bang out a few pages, it?s impossible to derive any joy from them. And the next thing you know, you?ve gone a whole week, month, or even year without writing.

Under these circumstances it?s easy to doubt if you?re really a writer at all. You may even be tempted to give up on writing entirely. You feel so blocked that you don?t see any way out. But at the same time you know that giving up on writing would be giving up on the best part of yourself. So what are you supposed to do?

The difference between successful and unsuccessful writers is not that one group never gets blocked. The difference is that successful writers know how to maintain their creative rhythm even when inspiration is not flowing.

Start the New Year right by getting back into the rhythm of writing with this simple challenge.

Jacob Krueger?s
2013 SCREENWRITING CHALLENGE

On January 1st, go out and buy yourself a nice journal. Find something that speaks to your personality, and makes you feel like a writer. It?s okay to spend too much. Think of it as an investment in something you?re going to use every day.

On January 2nd, set your clock to wake you up 15 minutes early, and as soon as you open your eyes, grab your journal and start writing. You have 15 minutes to write as much or as little as comes out.? Don?t worry about editing, planning or even thinking.? Just go ahead and write whatever comes out as quickly as you possibly can. It may be a scene or parts of a scene. It may be a line of dialogue, or a monologue, or just thoughts about your character. It may flow together, or it may not flow together at all. Don?t even try to make it good. Just allow your first instincts to find their way onto the page. And don?t worry about finishing? you only have 15 minutes? so whatever you leave unfinished can become the starting point for the next day?s writing.

You?re going to repeat this process every day until January 30th, writing 15 minutes every morning until writing is such a natural part of your daily routine that it occurs without even thinking about it.? You may find yourself continuing one storyline, or writing a new one every morning. If you get stuck, rewrite the scene from the day before from memory. It?s not important what you write. It?s important THAT you write.

It?s this rhythm that is going to make you a writer. So, if you sleep through one day, find 15 minutes to catch up later. Take your journal with you on the subway. Lock yourself in the bathroom at work. Stay up 15 minutes later that night.? And notice how that 15 minutes in the morning sets you to thinking about your writing all through the day?

On January 31st, you?ll complete the challenge, and read back through your work over the past month. You?ll be amazed at the growth in your writing you?ll see!

Finally, on Thursday, Feb 7th, as part of our monthly Cold Cuts Reading Series we?ll have a party to celebrate the work of everyone who is participating in the challenge, to share our experiences, and to make some new friends. (There will also be a raffle for some super screenwriting prizes!)

You can officially join the challenge by liking our new FACEBOOK PAGE and RSVPing for the Screenwriting Challenge Event, where you can also share your ongoing experiences with your fellow writers!

Happy New Year! And Happy Writing!

Israel Supreme Court Overturns Ban on Arab Politician

Israel's Supreme Court on Sunday overturned a decision by the Central Elections Committee banning Arab-Israeli politician Haneen Zuabi from standing in next month's snap general election.

"Following a hearing on 27/12/2012, it was decided unanimously to reject the Central Elections Committee's decision... to prevent representative Haneen Zuabi from standing for elections for the 19th Knesset," a summary of the court's decision said.

The summary, which was released ahead of the full decision later on Sunday, did not explain why the court was overturning the committee's decision, but confirmed that Zuabi would be able to stand in the January 22 vote.

A member of the Arab-Israeli leftwing Balad party, Zuabi is a controversial figure in Israeli society.

A firebrand critic of the government, Zuabi has regularly tangled with rightwing members of the Knesset, who sought to disqualify her from running in the next election.

They argue that she fails to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, and backed enemies of the state by participating in a 2010 Gaza-bound flotilla that was raided by Israeli commandos in an operation that killed nine Turkish activists.

Speaking to public radio after the court ruling, Zuabi said she was happy with the result.

"I welcome the Supreme Court's decision. This is what I expected," she said.

"I don't regret having participated in the Mavi Marmara (flotilla). I know what I did," she added.

"There was no legal basis for the (committee's) decision, which was based only on political considerations," she said in a separate interview with Israeli military radio.

"The Supreme Court has not succumbed to pressure from the racist right wing."

Israel's elections committee, which is composed of representatives from political parties, has in the past voted to ban Balad, as well as another Arab-Israeli party and other Arab Israeli politicians, from elections.

But those decisions were overturned by the Supreme Court, which had again been expected to strike down the decision banning Zuabi's participation in the January poll.

[VIDEO] Junior Dos Santos Comments on His Not so Warm Reception at the UFC 155 Weigh-ins
Posted by Jeffrey Harris?on 12.29.2012

The UFC heavyweight champion speaks...

UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos appeared on the UFC 155 Weigh-in special on Fuel TV and was asked about the boos he received at the weigh-ins:

Was Junior dos Santos surprised by the boos at the weigh-ins: "A little bit. We have a lot of Mexicans here, but I know we have a lot of Brazilians here too, and we'll have half and half."

Dos Santos on Velasquez putting his fist in his face at the weigh-in: "I think he'd like to show me he's very well prepared. That's what I do and not what he does."

Dos Santos on what he wants to prove with this fight: "I have nothing to prove. I have to prove for myself how hard I worked to be the champion. I'm very well prepared. For sure I'm going to get the victory."

How Dos Santos wants to finish the fight: "One more knockout. It's going to be like Cain likes to go to the ground and the fight will end there. If he gives me the chance, it'll be quicker than last time."

Does Dos Santos think Velasquez will try to take him down: "He'll try to take me down right away and I'm very well prepared and have good take down defense and I'll knock him out right away."

Maine greets gay marriage with midnight weddings

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? After waiting years and seeing marriage rights nearly awarded and then retracted, gay couples in Maine's largest city didn't have to wait a moment longer than necessary to wed, with licenses issued at the stroke of midnight as the law went into effect.

Among them were Steven Bridges and Michael Snell, who held a commitment ceremony six years ago but made marriage official under state law with a simple ceremony.

"It's historic. We've waited our entire lives for this," said Bridges, a retail manager, who's been in a relationship with the Snell, a massage therapist, for nine years. Bridges, 42, and Snell, 53, wore lavender and purple carnations on black T-shirts with the words "Love is love."

With Snell's two adult daughters looking on, they exchanged vows in the city clerk's office after getting the first marriage license issued to a same-sex couple in Portland.

Voters approved gay marriage in November, making Maine and two other states the first to do so by popular vote. The law is already in effect in Washington state; Maryland's takes effect on Tuesday, the first day of 2013.

Gay marriage was already legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia, but those laws were either enacted by lawmakers or through court rulings.

The Maine Legislature had once approved same-sex marriage, but it was overturned by a statewide referendum three years ago, crushing couples who had already made wedding plans. Gay marriage supporters collected signatures to put it on the ballot again, and this time it was easily approved.

Gov. Paul LePage signed off on the certified election results on Nov. 29, so the new law was to go into effect 30 days from that date. In addition to gay marriage becoming legal, same-sex marriages in other states will now be recognized by the state of Maine.

Nobody knew exactly how many couples would be rushing to get their marriage licenses early Saturday. Falmouth joined Portland in opening at midnight. A handful of other communities including Bangor, Brunswick and Augusta planned to hold special Saturday hours.

In Portland, the mood was festive with the crowd cheering and horns sounding at midnight as Bridges and Snell began filling out paperwork in the clerk's office in Portland City Hall.

More than a dozen couples stood in line to wait their turn amid the festive atmosphere. There were free carnation boutonnieres and cupcakes, and a jazz trio played.

Outside City Hall, a couple hundred people cheered Snell and Bridges when they emerged newly married, breaking into an impromptu song, the Beatles' "All You Need is Love."

Donna Galluzzo and Lisa Gorney also planned a midnight wedding, and theirs had all the trappings. They dined Friday night with friends, and then took a limo to City Hall. They had their rings, flowers, wedding vows and a friend to perform the ceremony.

They ended up near the back of the line awaiting marriage licenses, but that didn't matter.

"We decided it's a historic day and we thought it would be awesome to be a small part of history, to say we got married on the first day it's legal," Galluzzo said.

Not everyone was getting married right away.

Suzanne Blackburn and Joanie Kunian, of Portland, were among those in line to get their license at midnight, but they didn't plan to wed immediately. One of their grandchildren wanted them to get married on Valentine's Day.

"I don't think that we dared to dream too big until we had the governor's signature," Blackburn said. "That's why it's so important, because it feels real."

6 Ways to Use Recruitment Process Outsourcing to Turbocharge ...

6 Ways to Use Recruitment Process Outsourcing to Turbocharge Your Business- speedometer

Use the boost RPO can provide

Today?s post comes courtesy of business analyst and contributor Justin

Choosing to hire a professional RPO has its advantages. First, it has a huge cost cutting factor for different sectors. Hiring personnel is one example wherein the regular hiring process would require tons of research for candidates, ordination with job interviews and trainings. Despite the time spent on that process, there is still no assurance that they would be able to hire the person that they are looking for. Outsourcing outweighs all of the negative points brought upon by the regular process, which is why outsourcing recruitment is chosen and is preferred by companies and businesses worldwide. [Editor's Note: Interested in outsourcing? Check out this article on the business benefits]

6 Key Advantages

Here are a few of the advantages that outsourcing can bring:

  • The best thing that this strategy brings to companies is that it helps in cutting down the costs. Businesses often go to low wage countries because the labor rates are extremely lower compared to countries like New Zealand or Australia. India, which is known to be great and charge really low rates for this industry, are also one of the best bets of these companies but the quality that the Philippines provide for their customers and clients are unsurpassable to what other countries can give. This also cuts down on the payroll expenses, processing fees, training fees and other company costs that substantially build up in the long run.
  • Once a professional RPO is considered, you will now gain access to a pool of requirement specialists that are highly reliable. You will also be able to go through processes without having to worry about hurdles that will delay everything. All processes under your account will be monitored and inspected everyday to ensure high quality productivity.
  • Your products will not only be shipped to your distributors immediately. To ensure quality, all of your projects will be analyzed carefully by a team skilled in optimum research that will focus on every detail of the project. RPO?s will manage all of the operational activities with an organized plan in a strategic manner to avoid delays throughout your business.
  • Professional RPO?s have long been working with different companies which is why they are familiar with the different strategies and the effective recruitment tasks. They have a reliable database to do necessary researches and they have certain rule or benchmarks to make sure that all tasks are carried out really well to avoid erratic and inconsistent outputs
  • RPO?s have an in house quality control team that will ensure that the processing of the outputs is working well as well as the outputs itself. No need to hire multiple personnel to do this sector for you.
  • The R & D team will be the one responsible for looking out for new techniques and strategies to be incorporated with your recruitment process to further improve the search.

Bottom line, a professional RPO is chosen because of the proven and efficient benefits that it brings. Make a smart choice and give your business the quality that it deserves.

TigerLogic Acquires Storycode For Up To $7.25M To Bolster How Brands Reach Mobile Users

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 9.03.18 PMTigerLogic, a company with a market cap of about $56 million that provides data management and app development solutions for enterprises, said it agreed to acquire Portland mobile developer Storycode for up to $7.25 million in cash and stock today. The Irvine-based company says it will integrate Storycode’s technology into its social visualization platform called Postano. Yes, “social visualization” platform is a little vague, but basically Postano lets brands embed widgets with content froms social networks on their sites. They also offer an internal dashboard that lets clients monitor what people are saying about them on Twitter or Facebook, and they can also help with creating custom Facebook tabs and apps. Storycode has a mobile app publishing platform that media companies like Thomson Reuters, USA Today, NBC and CBS use to create iPhone and iPad apps. The mobile publishing platform will plug right into TigerLogic’s Postano product. According to an SEC filing, each share of Storycode’s stock will be converted into $6.75 million worth of TigerLogic’s stock. On top of that, a single share of preferred stock in Storycode will get converted into the right to receive $250,000. TigerLogic is also giving Storycode $100,000 in bridge financing and is taking on up to $150,000 in the company’s liabilities. Storycode actually has been through one previous acquisition. It was previously called FreeRange Communications after it spun out of Handmark in 2011. The company changed its name to Storycode last May after acquiring a Portland-based mobile agency.

Man pushed to death in front of NYC subway

Detectives in New York are searching for a female suspect who fled a subway station after a man was fatally pushed in front of a train on an elevated platform in Queens, N.Y.

At 8:04 p.m. on Thursday an unnamed man was standing on the northbound platform at 40th Street and Queens Blvd., waiting for the 7 train. Witnesses told police that a woman was walking back and forth on the platform and talking to herself before she took a seat on a wooden bench on the platform.

As the 7 train approached the station, witnesses said the woman rose from the bench and pushed the man onto the tracks, who was standing with his back to her.

Witnesses told police that the victim did not notice the woman behind him. He was struck by the first of the 11-car train, with his body pinned under the front of the second car as the train came to a stop, according to a statement from Deputy Commissioner Paul Brown.

After pushing the man onto the platform the woman then fled down the stairs to Queens Blvd. She was described as wearing a blue, white and grey ski jacket, and grey and red Nike sneakers.

It is unclear if the two knew each other, or whether anyone attempted to help the man to the platform before he was struck by the train.

Overnight the NYPD released surveillance video of the woman believed to be the suspect, Detectives were also canvassing locations along Queens Blvd for other witnesses and surveillance video.

Thursday's incident marks the second straphanger death this month--a man was killed in midtown after being pushed onto the subway tracks under an oncoming train.

On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was tossed onto the subway track at 49th Street and Seventh Avenue around 12:30 p.m. after an altercation with a man who was later identified as 30-year-old Naeem Davis. Davis has been charged with murder in Han's death and was ordered held without bail.

This booking photo provided by the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nev,. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, shows 50-year-old Brenda Stokes. Police in Las Vegas have issued a plea for information about 10-year-old Jade Morris after she failed to return home Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from a shopping trip with a woman who is thought to be Stokes. Stokes was arrested that night and accused of slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip. She made her first appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. (AP Photo/Clark County Detention Center )

(AP) ? Authorities said Friday they believe a casino worker killed a 10-year-girl several days before Christmas, then went to the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip and slashed the face of a co-worker with a pair of razor blades.

The search for Jade Morris ended Friday afternoon when officials confirmed that her body had been found Thursday in an undeveloped housing tract.

She died of multiple stab wounds, the Clark County coroner's office said.

Jade was last seen Dec. 21 with family friend Brenda Stokes Wilson, who picked her up to go Christmas shopping.

Wilson, 50, returned the car she had borrowed for the outing to a friend two hours later. Jade never came back. Investigators later found blood on the driver's door and steering wheel of the 2007 Saab sedan.

Later that night, Wilson was wrestled to the ground with razors in each hand after allegedly slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio casino.

A judge raised her bail to $60,000 from $600,000 Friday morning after she was identified as the prime suspect in the child's killing.

"It's no secret the defendant is the suspect in the murder of 10-year-old Jade Morris," prosecutor Robert Daskas told Senior Clark County District Court Judge Joseph Bonaventure at the hearing.

Later Friday, Las Vegas police homicide Capt. Chris Jones said investigators were still moving forward.

"As soon as we get all the evidence in that we need, we'll book her on the murder charges," he said.

Wilson has been jailed since the 21st on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison.

Police said she offered no help in the search for the missing girl. Murder and kidnapping charges could get her life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

On Thursday, Las Vegas police responding to a 911 call found a girl's body in unkempt brush near palm trees in a small traffic circle about 10 miles from the downtown Las Vegas outlet mall where Stokes was to have taken the girl shopping.

On Friday evening, Jones called the slaying "unfathomable."

"Even having our jobs, we still can't wrap our heads around this," he said. "A lot of people think that just because of our positions we can understand it, but we can't."

In court Friday morning, Wilson stood flanked by eight police officers as her lawyer, Tony Liker, clutching a Bible and a copy of the charging documents, asked the judge to postpone arraignment until Wednesday to give him time to meet with Wilson.

Wilson, who had been identified by police and prosecutors as Brenda Stokes, told the judge Friday that her full name was Brenda Stokes Wilson.

Jade's father, Philip Morris, was removed from court Wednesday by armed court officers after shouting questions about his daughter's whereabouts to Wilson. He did not attend Friday's hearing.

The two dated for several years, and Jade had a long and trusting relationship with Wilson, according to the girl's grandfather, Philip Tucker.

Tucker said Philip Morris lived in Billings, Mont., and worked at a Flying J truck stop for more than a year. He would stay with Wilson when he visited Las Vegas, Tucker said.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the slaying. But Tucker said Wilson appeared to believe that the face-slashing victim had become romantically involved with Philip Morris.

Wilson picked up Jade up for their shopping expedition around 5 p.m. Later, she got a ride with a friend to the Bellagio. She allegedly attacked her co-worker, Joyce Rhone, at around 9:30 p.m.

Rhone, 44, was hospitalized with deep cuts on her face, including one from her ear to the edge of her mouth.

Wilson told investigators that she visited her doctor last week, seeking to be admitted to a hospital "due to feeling like she wanted to hurt someone."

If you are creating a new website then I highly recommend creating a responsive website. WASHINGTON (AP) ? Amid partisan bluster, top members of Congress and President Barack Obama were holding out slim hopes for a limited fiscal deal before the new year. But even as congressional leaders prepared to convene at the White House, there were no signs that legislation palatable to both sides was taking shape.

The Friday afternoon meeting among congressional leaders and the president ? their first since Nov. 16 ? stood as a make-or-break moment for negotiations to avoid across-the-board first of the year tax increases and deep spending cuts.

Obama called for the meeting as top lawmakers alternately cast blame on each other while portraying themselves as open to a reasonable last-minute bargain.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid all but conceded that any effort at this late date was a long shot. "I don't know timewise how it can happen now," he said.

For Obama, the 11th-hour scramble represented a test of how he would balance the strength derived from his re-election with his avowed commitment to compromise. Despite early talk of a grand bargain between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner that would reduce deficits by more than $2 trillion, the expectations were now far less ambitious.

Although there were no guarantees of a deal, Republicans and Democrats said privately that any agreement would likely include an extension of middle-class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes, an Obama priority that was central to his re-election campaign. The deal would also likely put off the scheduled spending cuts. Such a year-end bill could also include an extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring, officials said.

To get there, Obama and Reid would have to propose a package that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would agree not to block with procedural steps that require 60 votes to overcome.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York said he still thinks a deal could be struck.

The Democrat told NBC's "Today" show Friday that he believes the "odds are better than people think."

Schumer said he based his optimism on indications that McConnell has gotten "actively engaged" in the talks.

Appearing on the same show, Republican Sen. John Thune noted the meeting scheduled later Friday at the White House, saying "it's encouraging that people are talking."

But Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., predicted that "the worst-case scenario" could emerge from Friday's talks.

"We will kick the can down the road," he said on "CBS This Morning."

"We'll do some small deal and we'll create another fiscal cliff to deal with the fiscal cliff," he said. Corker complained that there has been "a total lack of courage, lack of leadership," in Washington.

Speaking on the Senate floor Thursday, McConnell cautioned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Nevertheless, he said he told Obama in a phone call late Wednesday that "we're all happy to look at whatever he proposes."

If a deal were to pass the Senate, Boehner would have to agree to take it to the floor in the Republican-controlled House.

Boehner discussed the fiscal cliff with Republican members in a conference call Thursday and advised them that the House would convene Sunday evening. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an ally of the speaker, said Boehner told the lawmakers that "he didn't really intend to put on the floor something that would pass with all the Democratic votes and few of the Republican votes."

But Cole did not rule out Republican support for some increase in tax rates, noting that Boehner had amassed about 200 Republican votes for a plan last week to raise rates on Americans earning $1 million or more. Boehner ultimately did not put the plan to a House floor vote in the face of opposition from Republican conservatives and a unified Democratic caucus.

"The ultimate question is whether the Republican leaders in the House and Senate are going to push us over the cliff by blocking plans to extend tax cuts for the middle class," White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said. "Ironically, in order to protect tax breaks for millionaires, they will be responsible for the largest tax increase in history."

Boehner, McConnell, Reid and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi are all scheduled to attend Friday's White House meeting with Obama. Vice President Joe Biden will also participate in the meeting, the White House said.

Despite the urgency to act, the rhetoric Thursday was quarrelsome and personal.

The House of Representatives is "being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker," Reid said on the Senate floor. He attributed Boehner's reluctance to put a version of Senate bill that raised tax rates on incomes above $250,000 for couples to fears he could lose his re-election as speaker next week.

"Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff," countered Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner.

If a deal is not possible, it should become evident at Friday's White House meeting. If that occurs, Obama and the leaders would leave the resolution to the next Congress to address in January.

Such a delay could unnerve the stock market, which performed erratically Thursday amid the developments in Washington. Economists say that if the tax increases are allowed to hit most Americans and if the spending cuts aren't scaled back, the recovering but fragile economy could sustain a traumatizing shock.

But a sentiment is taking hold that despite a black eye to its image, Congress could weather the fiscal cliff without significant economic consequences if it acts decisively next month.

"Going over is likely because at this point both sides probably see a better deal on the other side of the cliff," Jared Bernstein, Biden's former economic adviser, wrote in a blog post Thursday.

By letting current tax cuts expire and rise, Bernstein and others say, Republicans would be voting to lower taxes next month, even if not for all taxpayers. Democrats ? and Obama ? would be in a stronger position to demand that taxpayers above the $250,000 threshold pay higher taxes, instead of the $400,000 threshold that Obama proposed in his latest offer to Boehner.

And the debate over spending cuts, including changes to politically sensitive entitlement programs such as Medicare, would have to start anew.
