Detroit Physicians at St. John Hospital and Medical Center have enrolled the first patient in Michigan in LEVANT2, a global, multicenter, randomized clinical trial evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the Moxy Drug Coated Balloon for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease. Thomas Davis, M.D., SJH&MC interventional cardiologist performed the case.

LEVANT 2, sponsored by medical device manufacturer Lutonix, Inc., is the first drug-coated balloon pivotal trial to be approved by the FDA. St. John Hospital is one of 55 centers around the world participating in the trial, which is expected to randomize 476 patients with diseased leg arteries. The trial will investigate whether the Moxy balloon is more effective than standard angioplasty at keeping leg arteries open and free from re-blockage over time.

LEVANT 2 is the largest randomized peripheral drug-coated balloon clinical trial to date, and one of the largest peripheral vascular studies ever conducted. Randomized patients in LEVANT 2 will be followed for a total of 5 years and independent core laboratories will be utilized to verify trial outcomes.

"We believe this trial may lead to a substantially better treatment option for patients with PAD," says Dr. Davis., LEVANT 2 site investigator at SJH&MC. "We are very proud of our ability to contribute to this important research and include ourselves in such a prestigious group of investigators around the world."

Drug-coated balloons are similar to standard angioplasty balloons except they are coated with an anti-restenosis drug aimed at preventing the artery from becoming blocked again. During the procedure, the Moxy balloon is inserted inside the narrowed area of the artery and then inflated in order to open the blockage and deliver the drug to the artery. After this short inflation, the balloon is removed from the body, leaving nothing but the drug behind in the artery.

"The potential opportunity to treat PAD without the use of a permanent implant is exciting. If the results of this trial are positive, we feel it could significantly change the way PAD is treated in the future," said Dr. Davis.

Restenosis refers to the re-narrowing of an artery following angioplasty or stenting. Restenosis is caused by an overgrowth of tissue inside the artery, typically in response to arterial injury at the original treatment site. Restenosis often occurs within the first 6 months following an intervention, and most often results in re-treatment.

LEVANT 2 is a follow-on trial to LEVANT 1, which was a 101-patient multicenter randomized trial. Patients either received the Moxy balloon or standard angioplasty for the treatment of diseased femoropopliteal arteries. Based on the success and positive results of the LEVANT 1 trial, LEVANT 2 was designed to investigate the device in a larger patient population.

"In trials of this magnitude and scientific rigor, it is imperative to have world-class research centers as your partners in the process. St. John Hospital is such an institution, and we are deeply appreciative of the commitment and resources they have dedicated to successfully enrolling this trial," said Dr. Dennis Wahr, CEO and co-founder of Lutonix.

Titans' Washington Could Play In NFL Opening Game ...

The Tennessee Titans are preparing to open the NFL regular season on Thursday night in Pittsburgh against the Superbowl champion Steelers and already they have to struggle with the impact of injuries to key personnel. Of all their injuries none are potentially more significant than the hamstring injury suffered by wide receiver Nate Washington in practice on August 24th. The most recent development, however, is a positive one for the Titans as Washington has indicated that hes feeling better and there?s a good chance hell play in Tennessee?s opening game.

Washington suffered a sprained hamstring in practice, and has been receiving daily therapy in hopes of having him ready for Thursdays NFL regular season opener. As of Tuesday, he indicated to the media that the hamstring was sore but not hurting and that it loosened up well after some stretching and warm-ups. Hes currently listed as questionable on the NFLs official injury report, but will be reclassified on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking to the local media, Washington was hopeful that hed be able to play against the Steelers but indicated that the final decision was out of his hands:

?I don?t know if I am going to play or not, that?s up to coach Fisher. I?m pretty happy with the progress that I?ve made ? Nothing is holding me back right now.?

Coach Jeff Fisher, meanwhile, was not giving any indication of his decision:

I?m impressed with what he has done so far.

Some sources close to the team are speculating that Washingtons true status is that of a game time decision. They further speculate that Fisher and Washington could be trying to paint a more positive picture in order to force the Steelers to spend their time game planning for the Titans talented wide receiver. Historically, Fisher has been cautious in similar situations and clearly theres no reason for him to rush Washington back into action and risk further injury and more lost playing time if hes not completely recovered. On the other hand, if he?s fully recovered there?s no reason not to get him on the field as soon as possible.

The Titans signed Washington to a six year, $27 million contract in the offseason with $9 million guaranteed. Hes expressed his desire to quickly make an impact on his new team:

?I want to come in and have an instant impact. Show not only the coaching staff but the whole Titans? Nation that this is going to be a new era.?

Washington, along with first round draft pick Kenny Britt were brought in hoping to better diversify the Titans run oriented offense. By establishing a downfield passing threat, it will presumably provide more room to run for Tennessees star running back duo of Chris Johnson and LenDale White. By making the offense more diverse the hope is that the Titans will be able to advance further in the NFL playoffs than the did last year

U.S. refiners, reactors eye restart as Irene passes (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Oil refineries and nuclear power plants along the U.S. East Coast eyed restarts on Sunday as Hurricane Irene left many with only minimal damage, while 3.6 million households and businesses remained without power.

The hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm with 60-miles-per-hour winds as it made landfall in New York, sparing the largest U.S. city the widespread power outages forecast by many.

Still, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warned it could take several days to restore power to areas experiencing blackouts on the East Coast.

New Jersey utility Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) said 330,000 customers could be without power for five to seven days. FEMA said the duration of outages on the East Coast would depend on whether systems were damaged by the storm or taken offline protectively.

New York City utility Consolidated Edison said on Sunday it had made no final decision on whether to cut power to lower Manhattan due to storm surges, but flooding in the area appeared less severe than feared.

Several East Coast oil refineries throttled back operations and ConocoPhillips shut its Bayway plant in New Jersey.

Conoco said Bayway remained shut on Sunday morning though its Trainer, Pennsylvania refinery continued to operate. No damage was reported at any plant on the East Coast as of 11:51 a.m.

PBF Energy said its New Jersey and Delaware refineries sustained no damage from the storm and were operating normally as of Sunday morning.

Two nuclear power plants were forced to shut during the storm, but Progress Energy said the units at its Brunswick plant in North Carolina should be back to full power within 36 hours.

A unit at Constellation Energy's Calvert Cliff plant in Maryland remained offline after an aluminum siding flew off a building and hit a transformer, forcing a precautionary shutdown on Saturday night. The firm said the reactor was safe and a second unit was running at full power.

As a precaution against winds, Exelon Corp took its Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey offline on Saturday. The plant normally supplies electricity to as many as 600,000 homes.

The oil hub of New York Harbor is expected to resume normal operations on Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard said, after imposing severe traffic restrictions as the storm bared down. Traffic restrictions will remain in place on Sunday.

IRENE SWIPES NEW YORK CITY

Irene tracked north toward New England after landing only a glancing blow on New York City.

Just over 110,000 homes and businesses in the city's five boroughs and neighboring Westchester County were without power at 11:51 a.m. EDT, Con Edison said, less than 4 percent of the total the company powers in the region.

Con Edison estimated most would have power restored by 10:00 a.m. EDT on Monday.

The largest blackouts took place in Virginia, where almost 40 percent of households and businesses were without power, Dominion Resources said.

Dominion said its damage assessment would be completed by noon on Monday.

"We ask for your patience while we complete this important restoration step because it allows us to identify the extent of damage, prioritize restoration so we can restore power to the greatest number of customers in the shortest amount of time, and accurately predict when we will complete restoration," the company said on its website.

Foods rich in protein, dairy products help dieters preserve muscle and lose belly fat: study

Foods rich in protein, dairy products help dieters preserve muscle and lose belly fat: study [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-Aug-2011

New research suggests a higher-protein, lower-carbohydrate energy-restricted diet has a major positive impact on body composition, trimming belly fat and increasing lean muscle, particularly when the proteins come from dairy products.

The study, published in the September issue of the Journal of Nutrition, compared three groups of overweight and obese, but otherwise healthy, premenopausal women. Each consumed either low, medium or high amounts of dairy foods coupled with higher or lower amounts of protein and carbohydrates.

The women exercised seven days per week for four months, a routine that included five days of aerobic exercise and two days of circuit weightlifting.

According to the researchers, there were identical total weight losses among the groups, but the higher-protein, high-dairy group experienced greater whole-body fat and abdomen fat losses, greater lean mass gains and greater increases in strength.

The tissue composition, exclusively fat, of the weight the women lost has profound implications for longer-term health, say the researchers.

"One hundred per cent of the weight lost in the higher-protein, high-dairy group was fat. And the participants gained muscle mass, which is a major change in body composition," says Andrea Josse, lead author of the study and a graduate student in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University. "The preservation or even gain of muscle is very important for maintaining metabolic rate and preventing weight regain, which can be major problem for many seeking to lose weight."

Researchers found the lower-protein, low-dairy group lost about a pound and half of muscle whereas the lower-protein, medium dairy group lost almost no muscle. In marked contrast, the higher-protein, high-dairy group actually gained a pound and half of muscle, representing a three-pound difference between the low- and high-dairy groups.

On top of the muscle mass differences, the higher-protein, high-dairy group lost twice as much belly fat than the lower-protein, low-dairy group.

"Fat in the abdomen is thought to be especially bad for cardiovascular and metabolic health, and it seemsaccording to what we found in this studyincreasing calcium and protein in the diet may help to further promote loss of fat from the worst storage area in the body," says Josse.

"A very important point is that these changes were not captured by simple measures of body weight or body mass index, which are the most commonly used measures of dietary 'success'" adds Stuart Phillips, a professor in the Department of Kinesiology. "These women also got fitter and stronger, which greatly reduces their risk of disease."

Health providers strive to ensure well-taught parents ? Health ...

MILWAUKEE, Wis. ? During a home visit with a social worker, in her second trimester of pregnancy, Kalia Yang stares at a chart that shows how many packs of cigarettes an unborn baby is exposed to if the mother smokes: Sixty-seven packs, or 1,350 cigarettes, if she smokes five cigarettes a day in the course of a full-term pregnancy.

Yang is expecting twins in November. She no longer smokes; she quit as soon as she suspected she was pregnant. It?s a big win for the babies and a small victory in Milwaukee?s battle against infant mortality.

Health officials will take it.

In some corners of the city, smoking during pregnancy is seen as a positive that leads to a smaller baby and a smoother delivery. In reality, smoking can cause miscarriage, premature birth and low birth weight. Some women consider breast-feeding uncivilized and unattractive. They don?t grasp its benefits, including possibly providing protection against sudden infant death syndrome.

Knowledge gaps, which exist everywhere, even in a community?s most stable neighborhoods, can be life-threatening if a woman is at risk of having a baby born too early or too small.

Health professionals call this ?health literacy.?

It?s the ability to obtain and understand accurate health information, to manage one?s behavior and to navigate the health care system. It can mean knowing when to see a doctor. It can mean asking the right questions, getting a timely diagnostic test or properly filling out a medical form.

Research shows a strong link between health literacy, health outcomes and medical expenditures.

?You can be very literate and be health illiterate,? said Jackie Tillett, a nurse midwife and director of the Midwifery & Wellness Center at Aurora Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee.

?Parenting is about being empathetic with your child and caring for your baby. Many people who never graduated from high school are good parents. And I know physicians with advanced degrees who are not good parents.?

A pregnant woman who understands how to care for herself, gets regular prenatal checkups and has support to navigate the health care system has the best chance of delivering a healthy baby.

?It?s not about being stupid or uneducated,? said Nicole Angresano, vice president for community impact at the United Way of Greater Milwaukee, which has joined the city?s fight against infant mortality. ?Information is only as good as it is understandable.?

Yang chose the Wheaton Franciscan-St. Joseph Women?s Outpatient Center for this pregnancy because her sister-in-law had a good experience there when she gave birth. This is Yang?s third pregnancy. The previous two ended in miscarriages, both in the first trimester. Yang blames her miscarriages on smoking, but no one can say for sure why she didn?t carry the babies to term.

Yang first came to the Women?s Outpatient Center because she was bleeding and didn?t know she was pregnant. She was having a miscarriage. She returned several months later to confirm a second pregnancy, but she miscarried again before her first checkup. This pregnancy is the first with regular checkups, frequent ultrasounds and the guidance of a social worker, she said.

Yang, 23, and her boyfriend of six years, Andy Moua, 25, are taking extra precautions this time, trying to do everything right. The couple is in a committed relationship in the Hmong tradition.

For now, the two are focused on learning about pregnancy and healthy babies.

Literacy skills are the strongest predictor of health, more than age, income, employment status, education level, race or ethnicity, according to the Partnership for Clear Health Communication. Older patients, recent immigrants, people with chronic diseases and those living in poverty are especially vulnerable to low health literacy.

One study shows that 40 percent of what shapes a person?s health is related to behavior, a higher proportion than genetics (30 percent), social-environment (20 percent) and access to care (10 percent).

To address behavior, changes are necessary on both sides of the doctor-patient relationship. A patient may not ask questions or share critical information because she doesn?t want to feel dumb. A doctor may assume a message is getting through and not take the time to make sure.

Most brochures that doctors give women to help them better understand pregnancy and possible complications are written at a 10th-grade reading level or higher, said Geoffrey Swain, medical director for the Milwaukee Health Department. But one in five people can?t read above a fifth-grade level, he said.

?Low health literacy makes it harder to get good medical care.?

Meanwhile, a pregnant woman?s friends or family members may pass along misinformation. They may not know doctors now say a baby should sleep on his or her back to help prevent SIDS. Or, one generation may pass a negative stereotype about breast-feeding to the next.

?Health literacy can be overcoming culture,? said Mary Mazul, a nurse midwife at the Women?s Outpatient Center at St. Joseph. ?We all have our own ideas. No matter what culture we come from, what our mothers taught us, not all things are correct.?

Health care providers are homing in on how to better help women have healthy babies.

Obstetrician Tina Mason often writes things down for her patients.

?If you have a patient with a medical problem, the stress of the problem can impact their ability to understand,? said Mason, who also is program director of Aurora Sinai Medical Center?s obstetrics and gynecology department.

?I approach a patient woman to woman, not as a hotshot doctor.?

At the end of appointments, she may ask patients to repeat what she told them so she?s sure they understand. She also coaches medical residents to speak to patients in plain language.

Efforts are under way both locally and nationally to get reader-friendly information into the community.

?We need to reach them in churches, beauty salons and the grocery store, not just the doctor?s office,? said Janice Whitty, chief of obstetrics for Nashville General Hospital at Meharry, who spoke during an Infant Mortality Summit in Milwaukee in May. ?Many women only go to the doctor?s office if they have a problem.?

Social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, are valuable tools to help educate women about healthy pregnancy, she said.

Pregnant women also can get free weekly text messages on their cellphones. The messages in English or Spanish are timed to specific stages of pregnancy. The text4baby service is from the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition.

Al Qaeda number two killed in Pakistan this week (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Al Qaeda's new second-in-command, Atiyah abd al-Rahman, was killed earlier this week in Pakistan, dealing a "major blow" to the group still reeling from the death of Osama bin Laden, U.S. officials said Saturday.

Rahman, a Libyan national, rose to the number two spot when Ayman al-Zawahri took the reins of al Qaeda after bin Laden was killed in May in a U.S. raid in Pakistan.

Officials did not say how Rahman was killed, but said it happened in Waziristan in northwest Pakistan where intelligence officials believe members of al Qaeda are hiding out.

"Atiyah's death is a tremendous loss for al Qaeda, because (Zawahri) was relying heavily on him to help guide and run the organization, especially since bin Laden's death," one U.S. official said.

"The trove of materials from bin Laden's compound showed clearly that Atiyah was deeply involved in directing al Qaeda's operations even before the raid. He had multiple responsibilities in the organization and will be very difficult to replace," the official said.

Another U.S. official said that "there's no question this is a major blow to al Qaeda. Atiyah was at the top of al Qaeda's trusted core."

Rahman ran daily operations for the group, spoke on behalf of bin Laden and Zawahri and was the one that "affiliates knew and trusted" and his death will make it more difficult for Zawahri to consolidate control, the official said.

"He planned the details of al Qaeda operations and its propaganda. His combination of background, experience, and abilities are unique in al Qaeda-without question, they will not be easily replaced," the official said.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month on a visit to Afghanistan that he believed the strategic defeat of al Qaeda was within reach if the United States could kill or capture up to 20 remaining leaders of the core group and its affiliates.

"News of his demise underscores what Leon Panetta has been saying for some time about al Qaeda: it's important to sustain intense pressure on this group of terrorists and thugs," a third senior U.S. official said.

"Dialing back on al Qaeda leadership in Pakistan, especially while they try to regroup after bin Laden's death, isn't the way to go. For the sake of our national security, they need to be knocked out for good."

VMS Goes Out of Business - PRNewser

A notice is now on the VMS homepage stating that the media monitoring and analytics company has filed for Chapter 7 liquidation today with the?United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

?The decision has been made after exhaustively evaluating many different options and with sadness for our loyal staff and customers,? the statement reads.

All employees have been terminated, effective today. We placed a call to the company and got no answer. Cision has already put a system in place to transition VMS customers.

Over the past year, the company has announced a number of staff changes, including layoffs last summer, a new president, and a new head of sales. And just over two weeks ago, the company announced a partnership with Media Monitors, an Asia-Pacific media intelligence company.

Cision president and COO Peter Granat told us they have set up a system to help VMS customers. A ?hot desk? has been established with an email address (broadcast@cision.com) and phone number (866.639.5087).

?We will have staff working through the weekend to help clients get ready for Monday morning,? he told us.

Granat also told us that the company has already gotten calls from VMS employees seeking jobs.

?We will be bringing on staff to help with this and have been staffing up over the summer. We?ll be adding to the teams that support broadcast accounts as well,? Granat said.

?Obviously it?s a sad day for the employees involved in the industry. But Cision is now uniquely positioned with a filtered broadcast service plus HD. Yes it is an opportunity for? Cision and other players in the industry, but that?s not what we?re focused on,? he added. Universal Information Services also says it?s prepared to help former VMS customers.

For its own part, Granat said that Cision has completed a transition to a digital strategy that was nearly three years in the making. The company has moved away from manual services, is showing organic growth in the U.S., and a return to profitability in Europe. (The company reported Q2 earnings last month.)

Granat said the company is in a ?much better position? to handle the ?convergence of PR and marketing? and is optimistic about the future.

Critical Mention, another media monitoring company, has also launched a special program for VMS customers, offering a 30-day all-access pass to the?CriticalMention.com Real-Time TV and Radio Intelligence Platform. You can check that out here.

*Update: PRWeek expands on the news of VMS? closure. During a conference call, company execs explained that Capital One would no longer finance the company and they were forced to shut down. The company was hurt by competition and 200 employees have lost their jobs.

NBA's Jordan Farmar heads to Israel during lockout (AP)

TEL AVIV, Israel ? Greeted at the airport by fans singing and banging drums, New Jersey Nets guard Jordan Farmar said Thursday he is excited about playing during the NBA lockout with Israeli champion Maccabi Tel Aviv, a club he followed as a youngster.

Aside from Israel's own Omri Casspi, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Farmar is the only Jewish player in the NBA.

He is one of the highest-profile players to play for Maccabi, the runner-up in the Euroleague last season and an organization he said is "committed to winning."

Farmar won two NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers before joining the Nets in 2010. The 6-foot-2 guard will play for Tel Aviv as long as the lockout continues.

"I'm committed to this team, to the coaching staff and the organization for the time I am here and I want to do my part to help the team grow," Farmar said at a news conference at Maccabi's Nokia Arena. "Leaving at the end is not something I'm looking forward to ... but there is a business aspect to it. Part of my contract says when the NBA restarts I have to go back."

Farmar has been interested in Maccabi since he visited Israel as a youngster and saw the team play. Farmar's parents divorced when he was a child. His mother is Jewish, and his stepfather is Israeli. His father, former baseball player Damon Farmar, is black.

After playing for UCLA, Farmar became the first Jewish player in the NBA since Danny Schayes ? son of Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes ? retired in 1999.

"Jordan is one of the best and most exciting and I believe most special guards who have come to Israel for a long time. We're thrilled to have him," Maccabi coach David Blatt said. "The great part of the story is Jordan wanted to come and we wanted him. It was really a decision of the heart rather than a professional matter."

Farmar expects to adjust easily to the European game and fit in well with a deep Maccabi squad.

"I'm here to be a positive influence," he said. "I'm a leader by nature, whether I'm on the floor or not. I'm not here to show anybody up. I'm just trying to be a member of the team, a positive influence and whatever they ask of me I'll do."

Introduction to Sociology | Animal Rescue

Human is a social being and thus cannot thrive single. With this, several issues of relations and conduct show up that require special attention for smooth ride towards a dignified society. This led to the birth of an altogether new discipline termed as Sociology.

In a nutshell, Sociology basically studies human society as an interconnected whole. But here, it may be noted that an unauthentic study is not sociology, on the other hand, it is a science which demands certain rules in its observation and analysis. One of its tasks is to unravel the connection between a personal problem and a public issue.

It is not hard to notice how a poverty-stricken family as a whole contributes greatly to the assessment of the social structure. A homeless couple in a society has raised homelessness as a public issue which led to the operationalization of the Indira Awas Yojana from 1999-2000.

Thus, activities and troubles occurring within the character of the individual and within the range of his immediate relations with others may transcend the boundary of local environments and reach out to influence the society.

But it is interesting to note that how a society as well greatly determines the personal status of an individual. When a society is industrialized, a peasant becomes a worker; a feudal lord is liquidated or becomes a businessman. When economy goes down, people go broke and at times of war, common man is made to hold arms, a wife lives alone and a child grows up without a father.

Society is a simple yet complex network of human life. In the course of development of civilization, we have created an intricate pattern of societies which makes a person belong to more than one society. For instance, in foreign countries, an individual is regarded as an associate of the Indian Society whereas the same person, when in India, is recognized by either linguistic or ethnic community or a religious or caste or tribal society. This diversity makes it difficult to understand which ?society? we are referring to.

In a country, some are rich and most are not, likewise some are well educated and others are illiterate, some have great opportunities for advancement in life and others lack them altogether. So, the differences in a society are further accentuated by inequalities.

Common sense explanations are generally based on what may be called naturalistic and/or individualistic explanation. Common sense unlike sociology is indubitable. While common sense is basically an individualistic sense of perception, sociology has a far broader aspect. Sociology is both systematic and questionable.

Influenced by scientific theories of natural evolution and findings about pre-modern societies made by early travelers, colonial administrators, sociologists and anthropologists sought to categorize societies into types and to distinguish stages in social development.

Darwin?s observation of association of the living organisms reflected how sociology studies empirical reality. The Enlightenment, a European intellectual movement of the late 17th and 18th centuries, became another factor which pushed the need of sociology.

The French scholar Auguste Comte (1789-1857) considered to be founder of sociology and other sociologists like Karl Marx and Herbert Spencer played significant role in evolution of sociology.

Economic activities also contributed to the making of sociology and gave it an altogether new context. Capitalism, with markets as key instrument of productive life, totally changed the economic scenario of England. Hence, England was the centre of the Industrial Revolution. The after effects of this were change of occupations, migrations etc.

Undoubtedly, this economic revolution successfully brought about noticeable and constructive changes to the society as the living standards rose.

Situations took drastic turn between 17th and 19th century, when an estimated 24 million Africans were enslaved. In the 1800s, a large number of Indian labourers were transported to far-off places like Surinam in South America or in the West Indies or the Fiji Islands, for running commercial crop plantations.

Consequently, uneven transformations of societies were witnessed.

Colonialism was an essential part of modern capitalism and industrialization. The writings of western sociologists held a view, different from the exact truth but still helped a lot in understanding the social transition in India.

In western world, sociology and sociology anthropology were considered separate disciplines. According to a standard western textbook, sociology is regarded as ?the study of human groups and societies, giving particular emphasis to the analysis of the industrialized world?. On the other hand, social anthropology is interpreted as ?the study of simple societies of non-western and therefore ?other cultures?.

Clearly, this distinction would fail, when applied in India, as ours is a country with a vast diversity of religious, linguistic, regional, ethnic etc. and also rural and urban. So, sociology and social anthropology were merged for an easier and broader prospect.

The scope of sociological study is extremely wide ranging from downtrodden to the billionaires.

Sociology is a part of a group of social sciences, which also includes anthropology, economics, political science and history. These are inter-related to each other. For instance how would a political scientist or economist study gender roles and their implications for politics or the economy without sociology of the family or gender division of labour.

Economics is basically the study of production and distribution of goods and services. The conventional economics focuses strictly on the exact terms, whereas socio-economic approach analyses on their interdependence and as well as each entity, separately. This consists of observation of economic behavior in the context of social norms, values, practices and interests.

For example, the large investment in the advertisement industry is aimed at reshaping lifestyles and consumption patterns.

Despite the inter-relation, sociology does not provide technical solutions unlike economics. In short, the former is figurative while the latter is literal.

The classical political science concentrates on two elements: political theory and government administration. The theory part mainly deals with the ideas about of government from Plato to Marx whiles administration provides the formal structure of government rather than its actual operation.

Political science is based on concrete facts of functioning of the organizations whereas sociology researches the areas of impact of it. Sociology assesses the inter-relations of the institutions in the country.

Nevertheless, recent Indian elections have seen the active indulgence of both. Studies have also been conducted in membership of political organizations, process of decision-making in organizations, sociological reasons for support of political parties, the role of gender in politics etc.
