Will Your Home Improvement Project Add Value To Your Home?

Why do so many people spent a lot of money on home improvement projects every year?

There are many reasons that home owners choose to complete large home improvement projects:

  • They want to add value to their home for when/if they decide to sell
  • They want to improve the look or functionality of the home to make it more conducive to their way of life
  • They have to make repairs in order to keep their house operating effectively

There are different opinions as to whether or not a home improvement project will add value to your house; some will, some will not. You should consider several things before jumping into that project:

  • What are you planning to improve?
  • Do you plan to do some of the work by yourself or are you hiring contractors?
  • Based on you home the way it is, will the money spent be worthy of the investment?

If you?re looking to increase values for your house through home improvement projects, then the most important thing is to figure out is which project will definitely improve the values.

These are a few things you should ask yourself:

  • Will the home improvement projects add space, functionality or add a benefit to your area? Like converting your bedroom into a master suite. Buyers are looking for a place where they can relax and rewind after a hard day, what better than a master suite with a sitting area and a large bathroom that includes a jacuzzi tub?
  • Does the home improvement project make the area more attractive, not only to you but to others? Like adding a porch or deck. Decks or enclosed porches added to the exterior of a home will always draw the buyer that is looking for an outdoor haven. This holds especially true for buyers that are into their vegetable or flower gardens.
  • Does the home improvement project make significant positive changes to the home? For instance, if you upgrade your hvac system and opt for one that has more efficiency, not only will the buyer be more comfortable in the home, but they will have the additional benefit of saving money every month in utility costs. Call a hvac contractor and they can provide a quote for a new system that you can afford and increases your efficiency.

The biggest question you can ask yourself is, if you went into a house like yours without the improvement projects, would you be apt to pay more if it had them? The response to this question would most likely be the same as it would be from a potential buyer. We know you love your home, but stand back, think about it, and form an objective opinion. The value of a house is most definitely defined by the way that it?s valued by a buyer, if your house is on the market, then iit?s really up to pleasing these potential buyers with home improvements.

If you want to know for sure that the home improvement project you are considering will be worth the money, you should contact an appraiser. They can clue you in to projects that are likely to give you a return on your money!
