Promote Your Book Out of Town | Writing and Publishing News

This is excerpted from my latest ebooklet which I will offer for free as soon as I get it finished (maybe today). It?s called, ?50 Ways to Sell Your Book Through Your Personality.?

If you have a book to promote, you?ll probably be out doing some public speaking to bring attention to it. This is highly recommended. Well, you?ll most likely be more warmly welcomed and your programs more well-attended when you speak locally, where you are known. But if you have a trip planned or your book is connected in some way to another city or state, I urge you to consider traveling and speaking. Maybe you live in Mississippi, but your novel is set in Connecticut. See about speaking to residents at various venues in this state. If you?re planning to visit family in another city, set up radio interviews, book signings and speaking engagements while there.

I often combine pleasure and business when I travel. Once when I visited a friend in Arizona, I arranged to speak to a group of writers at a local library. We took a trip to Nashville and I met with a group of writers in a large bookstore there. I find that it helps to have the assistance and support of locals to help you set up these out-of-town events. This is just another reason why it is important that you spend time researching organizations online and connecting with others in your field, industry, interest or genre.

In my situation, I am already known through many channels related to publishing and book promotion because of my longtime and ongoing article contributions to industry publications, my appearances at so many writing conferences, my high-profile status as executive director of SPAWN, my eight-year-old daily blog and so forth. So when I plan a trip out of town, I do an Internet search for writers? groups in the area. I contact group leaders as far in advance as I can?a year or several months is ideal?and try to set something up. In this case, the writers? group leader already has venues in mind, she or he has access to their groups? email list. They do the promo. All I have to do is show up.

But keep in mind, that I may not have been invited if I hadn?t taken the initiative and made the contact. Here?s another reminder that YOU need to think of yourself as the CEO of your book?foremost and always.

This ebooklet will cover 50 types of promotion you can do personally and many tips for participating in them. Watch for this valuable freebie to come to Patriciafry.com. In the meantime, you can still download 50 Ways to Prepare for Publishing Success. FREE. http://www.patriciafry.com

If you missed my other two ebooklets which I offered for free for a period, you can still order them for $3.95 here: http://www.matilijapress.com They are ?50 Ways to Sell Your Ebooks.? Scientists link extreme weather to giant atmospheric waves

A new study links extreme weather events to interference in global air-flow patterns.

Extreme weather events have been on the rise in the last few decades, and man-made climate change may be causing them by interfering with global air-flow patterns, according to new research.

The Northern Hemisphere has taken a beating from?extreme weather?in recent years ? the 2003 European heat wave, the 2010 Pakistan flood and the 2011 heat wave in the United States, for example. These events, in a general sense, are the result of the?global movement of air.

Giant waves of air in the atmosphere normally even out the climate, by bringing warm air north from the tropics and cold air south from the Arctic. But a new study suggests these colossal waves have gotten stuck in place during extreme weather events.

"What we found is that during several recent extreme weather events these planetary waves almost freeze in their tracks for weeks,"?lead author Vladimir Petoukhov, of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany, said in a statement. "So instead of bringing in cool air after having brought warm air in before, the heat just stays."

How long these weather extremes last is critical, the researchers say. While two or three days of 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) pose little threat, 20 days or more can lead to extreme heat stress, which can trigger deaths, forest fires and lost harvests. [The World's 10 Weirdest Weather Events]

Monster Waves

The researchers created equations to model the motion of the massive air waves, determining what it takes to make the waves plough to a stop and build up. The team then used these models to crunch daily weather data from the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction.

During extreme weather events, the waves were indeed trapped and amplified, the scientists found. They also saw a significant increase in the occurrence of these trapped waves.

Here's how the waves may be getting trapped: The burning of fossil fuels causes?more warming in the Arctic?than in other latitudes, because the loss of snow and ice means heat gets absorbed by the darker ground, not reflected (as it would by the white snow). This warming lessens the temperature difference between the Arctic and northern latitudes like Europe. Since these differences drive air flow, a smaller difference means less air movement. Also, land areas warm and cool more easily than oceans. The result is an unnatural pattern of air flow that prevents the air waves from circulating over land.

The study's results help explain the spike in summer weather extremes. Previous research had shown a link between?climate change and extreme weather, but did not identify the mechanism.

"This is quite a breakthrough, even though things are not at all simple ? the suggested physical process increases the probability of weather extremes, but additional factors certainly play a role as well, including natural variability," study co-author Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, also of PIK, said in a statement.

The 32-year period studied provides a good explanation of past extreme weather events, the researchers say, but is too short to make predictions about how often such events may occur in the future.

The findings were reported online today (Feb. 25) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Real Racing 3 hits the Play Store with new freemium model

Real Racing 3

The much-awaited release of Real Racing 3 from EA has finally come, and it's sticking with the freemium model that has received much attention leading up to the release. The game certainly looks fantastic from a graphical standpoint, and the gameplay seems to be top notch like previous editions in the series as well. What's keeping people cautious is the new freemium model, which lets anyone play for free but will require in-app purchases to get in-game actions like car repairs finished faster. There's a store to buy in-game currency at different rates, or you can buy "Packs" at a discount that have different unlocks bundled together. It's certainly interesting, but probably won't appeal to those who would prefer to have a single purchase up-front to unlock everything.

The game is just a small download from the Play Store, but you should have some battery and a stable network connection available when you launch it to download all of the additional content. Even with no game saves, the entire package is weighing in at about 1.2GB.

Citation characteristics in the Arts & Humanities - Research Trends

The main topic addressed in this article is how frequently authors cite documents that are more than 15 years old and how Humanities journals compare to Science journals in this respect. As current scientific publications become available more quickly and readily over web-based databases, it?s becoming important to test how older publications, which might not be as interactive or available as their newer counterparts, are cited, at what rate, and which disciplines cite relatively newer research compared to others that might cite older articles. In addition, the age of the cited references has the potential to reveal which factors influence such choices and whether they are ?time dependent? or ?field dependent? (1). Within the time-dependent factors, Bornmann and Daniel (1) point to two separate trends that emerge from the literature: citations of more current articles, mainly due to the fact that there are more of them; and a tendency to cite papers that received a large amount of citations on the basis of their acceptance and popularity. In this article, we focus more on studying the former phenomenon, examining whether recent articles are cited more and in what disciplines this phenomenon is more apparent. Therefore, this study hypothesizes that certain scientific disciplines such as Medicine and Engineering cite more current research articles, while others such as Arts & Humanities, Economics and Mathematics cite older research.

?

Data Collection & Methodology

We randomly selected a corpus of 63 journals from 14 disciplines (see Appendix A) and collected the following data fields for the analysis:

  1. Journal Title
  2. Year Started ? the year the journal first appeared
  3. Total number of articles published up to 2011
  4. Total number of references within each journal, per year from its start-time to the present
  5. Total number of references to articles dated before 1996 (per journal per year)
  6. Total number of references? to articles dated post 1995 (per journal per year)
  7. The journal?s main discipline - The disciplinary assignment of each journal was derived from the Scopus database which assigns a discipline to each source it covers. In many cases, Scopus will assign more than one discipline to each source. In such cases, we selected the 1st discipline as the main subject area to which a journal belongs.
  8. Topics covered in the journal ? the topic lists were retrieved from the journal?s aims and scope.

?

Findings

Average number of references per article

We calculated the average of the number of references per article for each of the disciplines. As can be seen from Figure 1, the journals in Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities and Physics and Astronomy have the largest average number of references per article while the lowest average number of references per article occurs in the titles covering Health Professions and Earth and Planetary Sciences.

Figure 1: The average number of references per article per discipline

In addition we looked at the average number of references per article in the six A&H journals in our sample. These journals include Journal of Medieval History, Lingua, Poetics, Design Studies, Journal of Phonetics, and Journal of Cultural Heritage. We found that History related journals have the largest references per article, followed by journals related to Linguistics, while the smallest number of references occurred in Poetics.

Percentage of references dated 1996 and after

We calculated the percentage of references dated 1996 to the present, per discipline according to the journals? disciplinary assignment and then averaged these citations per discipline (see Figure 2). Examining the references, we found that 60% of the references cited in the A&H journals in our study sample are new, meaning the articles referenced were published in 1996 or after. Examining the six A&H journals individually we found that history related journals tend to reference newer publications while linguistics related journals tend to reference older publications. Disciplines covered by journals in this study showing 70%-80% references to articles published post-1995 are Earth and Planetary Sciences, Medicine, Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Engineering, and Materials Science. However, articles in our A&H titles reference newer materials when compared to study journals in disciplines such as Mathematics with 40% newer references, Social Sciences (45%), Agriculture (47%) and Computer Science (50%). This finding is quite notable considering that A&H content is considered to develop over time and where ?the masters are continually discussed? (2).

Disciplinary growth and references age

The finding that 60% of cited references in the A&H journals in our study set are new, i.e., published after 1995, led us to examine the overall growth rate of the number of articles in our journal sets arranged by discipline, and attempt to find out whether growth rate correlates to the references age. The rationale here was that in fast growing disciplines, where articles are published more often and in larger numbers, the age of references will be younger mainly because there are more recent materials available. In slower growing disciplines, on the other hand, the expectation was that the age of the references will be older because there are not as many new materials available. In order to analyze this, we compared the overall article growth in each of the disciplines from 1960 to the present. As can be seen from Figure 3, the fastest growing disciplines are Medicine and Engineering and these are also the disciplines that have the younger references age. A&H growth is much slower, yet its references are fairly new (i.e. post 1995).

Figure 3: Overall disciplinary growth over 5-year intervals

?

Conclusions

The Arts & Humanities journals in our sample show a relatively large number of references per article with an average of almost 56 references. When examining the average number of references per article in the A&H journals in our sample, we found that History has the largest amount of references per article, followed by journals related to Linguistics. The smallest number of references per article was seen in Poetics. In this respect it is compatible with Social Sciences and Physics and Astronomy, which show similar reference per article ratios. Despite their fairly slow growth rate, especially when compared to Medicine or Engineering, A&H articles tend to reference newer articles (i.e. published after 1996) in approximately 60% of the cases. This discipline, which was traditionally considered as building upon older materials, actually shows a relatively high number of references to newer materials. This finding is contrary to our initial hypothesis, which assumed that A&H articles will reference older materials, especially when the ?classics? have been assumed to be used often. For the six A&H journals in our sample, Journal of Medieval History, Lingua, Poetics, Design Studies, Journal of Phonetics, and Journal of Cultural Heritage, the percentage of post-1995 cited references is 44%, 63%, 69%, 73%, 62% and 72%, respectively. It follows that for all journals except the first this percentage is compatible with that in source titles covering Physics and Astronomy, Environmental Sciences and Business and Management, which show approximately 65% references to materials published after 1996.

?

Limitations and Further Research

This study was conducted using a small sample of 63 journals. In order to test the findings in this study, a much larger scale is needed and therefore it is necessary to analyze more journals per discipline. In a larger study, it will be important to include at least 20 journals per discipline in order to have a sufficient amount of journals and citations to analyze.

In addition, a comparison between different databases is important. Each database covers citations differently. Thus, comparing Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar, for example, can provide a better understanding of the differences in citation coverage and how these influence the way each discipline is perceived.

Finally, a more granular approach to the disciplinary and topical analysis is needed. In today?s research landscape, where many journals are becoming more interdisciplinary, it will be of significance to analyze sub-topics and their citations behavior and make the differentiation between them.

Obama nears deadline on gay marriage decision

(AP) ? The next phase of President Barack Obama's evolution on gay marriage may come with the deadline for his administration to weigh in on a landmark Supreme Court case that could determine whether same-sex couples have a constitutional right to wed.

Gay rights supporters are pressing the administration to file a friend-of-the-court brief urging the justices to overturn California's gay marriage ban. Obama is not required to file a brief, though he raised expectations in his second inaugural address when he declared that gays and lesbians must be "treated like anyone else under the law."

An administration brief would not be legally binding. But it could offer the clearest insight into Obama's views on gay marriage, which he supports but has said should be governed by the states.

Ahead of Thursday's deadline, dozens of prominent Republicans signed a friend of the court brief asking the justices to declare California's Proposition 8 ballot measure unconstitutional. Among them are former GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman and Florida Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

The Proposition 8 ballot initiative was approved by California voters in 2008 in response to a state Supreme Court decision that had allowed gay marriage. Twenty-nine other states have constitutional amendments banning gay marriage, while nine states and the District of Columbia recognize same-sex marriage.

Gay rights advocates are anticipating the administration filing a broad brief, one that would ask the justices to not only strike down the California measure, but also rule that the Constitution forbids any state from banning same-sex unions. But the administration could also file a narrower brief applying only to California.

Even the latter brief would appear to mark a shift away from the president's contention that states have the right to determine whether to allow same-sex marriages.

While an administration brief alone is unlikely to sway the high court, the government's opinion does carry weight with the justices.

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli would formally file a brief, though he has been consulting with White House officials. And it's almost certain that Obama, a former constitutional law professor, made the administration's final decision.

In his inaugural address, the president said the nation's journey "is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law."

"For if we are truly created equal, than surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well," he said.

Obama has a complicated history on gay marriage. As a presidential candidate in 2008, he opposed the California ban but didn't endorse gay marriage. As he ran for re-election last year, he announced his personal support for same-sex marriage but said marriage was an issue that should be decided by the states, not the federal government.

Public opinion has shifted in support of gay marriage in recent years. In May 2008, Gallup found that 56 percent of Americans felt same-sex marriages should not be recognized by the law as valid. By November 2012, 53 percent felt they should be legally recognized.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the Proposition 8 case on March 26. One day later, the justices will hear arguments on another gay marriage case, this one involving provisions of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. The act defines marriage as between a man and a woman for the purpose of deciding who can receive a range of federal benefits.

The Obama administration abandoned its defense of the law in 2011 but continues to enforce it. In a brief filed last week, the government said Section 3 of DOMA "violates the fundamental constitutional guarantee of equal protection" because it denies legally married same-sex couples many federal benefits that are available only to legally married heterosexual couples.

How To Get Clients Without Cold Calling. | Internet Marketing Montreal

A little about my personal story, I came to Canada some years ago and decided to start my consultant business giving internet marketing advice and services to businesses.
I had two main problems:

  1. even though I knew how to speak English I was incredibly insecure about my accent
  2. I had previous cold calling experience and knew how soul crushing it was, how your negotiation position was reduced and the price was the only factor to negotiate.

I started cold calling with very minimal to no results but instead of hitting my head against a wall or brainwashing myself about how to be ?tougher and keep cold calling.? I started looking for a different way to get clients.
One day while surfing the net I found Gary Halbert?s website, this is where I learned how he used to sell different products and services via mail, I devoured his site and applied the principles to little info products I had created. I wrote sales copy to sell the product and Holy Crap ? it started pulling sales!

It was then when I decided to use the same direct marketing principles in order to attract clients. Following are the resources I have used in order to get clients without cold calling. I have been a consultant for lawyers; a world renowned luxury resort chain and I am currently working with several adult oriented sites.

Info Marketing

Perry Marshall
You will learn not only the principles of PPC and direct marketing but more importantly the principles of sales and marketing. I have personally bought many products from him and just the information alone that he gives you for free in his auto responders is by far one of the best marketing lessons you will get anywhere.

Dan Kennedy
This man taught me the principles of information marketing, how to use and create real authority and how to use magazines and newsletters to attract more clients.

Vistaprint
In order to print my direct marketing message on my business cards, postcards and direct mail pieces. Great prices, great interfaces, they allow you to export lists of prospects, designs, etc?

Print your book
One very important piece of being a respected consultant is to have a book that is part of your info marketing arsenal, the people who buy your book are one of the best prospects, those who buy information to solve a problem are way more qualified to hire somebody to implement the solution than those who don?t, so here are some great resources to self-publish your book.

Create Space

www.lulu.com

When you are going to mail an offer the most important thing is the quality of the list, that is why you need to know the standard rate and Data List Book, you can order it online here.

www.srds.com

or you can get a copy at your local library there are thousands of lists of any topic you need.

Another weapon in your info marketing arsenal is article marketing, but not in the usual way, sending your best articles to magazines and local newspapers is a great way to get qualified leads, again a prospect buying information about a topic or a specific problem is more willing to pay for the implementation.

The technical journals struggle to get good content in every issue, so as long as you deliver your articles on time and they are 90% content 10% pitch, the editors will like you.

www.magazines.com

This site can help you get the names and sometimes even the contact information of many technical journal editors.

Giving conferences and seminars for a large group or even 3 -5 attendees is another great way to produce content for your articles, books and lead generation, for this I have used:

www.meetup.com

For $17/month you can create a local group about your themes, you can receive leads and contacts, regardless of whether you charge a fee or do it for free.

www.anymeeting.com

A free webinar system that allows you to charge money for your webinars (Anymeeting.com charge a fee of $2.50 or 2.5% of how much you charge per sale) it also allows you to record your webinar and to charge the prospects for a copy of the recording (again they will charge the 2.5% fee for each sale made.)

www.gotomeeting.com

Once you start generating more money and follower?s gotomeeting.com is the way to go for $49/month.

A crucial part in converting more visitors into prospects and prospects into clients is the follow up and in order to leverage all your marketing on auto responder is the way to go.

Aweber

Without doubt this is the best option, you configure a set of ten value packed, direct marketing oriented emails and you will be rolling, as part of the follow up system you need to include a contract for your prospects to download and sign, I have used Aweber for this.

www.lawdepot.ca

I am going to be updating this list when I get new resources and I would have to invite the other direct marketing lovers to make this a resource page for people who want to market their services in a better way.

The party's over for Fashion's Night Out

NEW YORK (AP) ? The party's over for Fashion's Night Out.

The annual shopping event has been part of New York Fashion Week each September since 2009, when it was created in response to the recession. It was masterminded by Vogue's Anna Wintour and championed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

The event expanded to 500 U.S. cities and 30 cities globally. Celebrities mingled with shoppers, champagne was served and designers sang karaoke and played pingpong to drum up business for the important fall retail season.

CFDA CEO Steven Kolb said Wednesday that he was proud of what had been accomplished. However, there was grumbling from some stores and designers that it cost money they weren't sure they saw back in sales.

Fashion's Night Out will still be held in select international cities.

GAYTWOGETHER: Gay Relationships: ?Should We Have Sex Yet ...

Gay Relationships: ?Should We Have Sex Yet? Negotiating Your First Time With Mr. Wonderful? - Part One Introduction - Question: At what point does a dating relationship turn sexual if you?re looking for a lasting relationship?

The reader posing this question goes on to say that in his experience, sex too soon in a dating relationship seemed to make the connection all about sex, while waiting for an extended period of time resulted in men perceiving him as a ?tease? or being uninterested in them for anything but just friendship.

So what?s a guy to do? When is the right time to have sex so as not to sabotage the development of a potentially healthy relationship with a compatible dating prospect? Well, the long and the short of it is that there is no right time! There?s no science or magic formula to negotiating the right time to be sexual to guarantee lasting success. There are no guarantees in relationships. What it boils down to is each individual?s readiness and comfort level with taking things to that next step and keeping the channels of communication open.

So while there?s no hard-fast rule, this article will offer some tips and questions for reflection for you to decide when the time is right for you to take things to the ?bedroom level.? Through this content, perhaps you will discover some factors that might promote the opportunity for success of a long-term relationship that you can integrate into your own dating plan and sexual decision-making practices.

Sex & Gay Dating:

Sex is obviously a very important part of a relationship. In gay dating, sex actually plays a vital developmental role in helping a man to explore his sexuality during the coming-out process and forming his identity as a gay man; it?s a healthy rite-of-passage. Sex plays other roles though in gay culture. Its purpose can be for:

? pure recreational fun
? tension release
? a thrill for conquest
? a rebellion against heterosexist norms
? an uncontrollable addiction
? a way to boost one?s self-esteem
? a mask for emotional problems
? a temporary cure for boredom or loneliness
? horniness gratification
? a vehicle for avoiding emotional intimacy?among others.
For you, as the serious dater seeking Mr. Right, your vision for the primary purpose of sex is as an expression of your feelings of adoration for one another, cementing a bond of closeness and connection as you begin to seal an identity as a couple with the intention of life-long commitment.

Your job is to adequately screen your dating partners to determine if their vision for sexuality and life aligns with yours. It?s when there?s a mismatch between these visions or differing motives from the purposes above that leads to relationships ending before they even got started when sex enters the picture early on.

Knowing Thyself:

Before you even begin your dating adventures, you must have a solid vision in place of what and who you?re looking for. What are your personal requirements, needs, and wants for a life partner and a relationship? What does dating mean to you and what does it look like? What are your sexual values and attitudes? The answers to these questions become your guide for detecting the ?right? vs. the ?wrong? types of guys you?re seeking.

Sex is so glamorized in our gay culture that the pressure to succumb to its powerful influences can be overwhelming. That?s why you must have a plan in place before you date so you can more readily ?stick to your guns? and not be swayed by temptations or other forces. Knowing yourself and your values is key. Your beliefs about the role you want sex to play in your dating life will shape your behavior as such.

Meeting Mr. Wonderful?Now What?

It?s hard work creating your own vision, but then to assess another guy?s vision for compatibility is another feat that?s not easily accomplished in one or two dates. It?s a process. That?s why introducing sex too early into a dating relationship can be sabotaging because the relationship gets defined around sex before a foundation of trust and intimacy has been established.

This isn?t to say that meaningful relationships can?t evolve from a sex-based affiliation, but in a lot of cases premature sex can send the wrong message or tone that then permeates the entire relationship?and it can be irreversible. Not to mention determining your new guy?s sexual values and motives discussed earlier may not be so easily detectable in the early stages of dating.
?
Most gay dating experts agree that a wise approach for those seeking long-term relationships is to hold off on sex for at least 3-4 dates with a man. This allows time for a friendship to develop, to screen each other to the best you can for ?goodness-of-fit?, and lets the relationship be defined around common interests, goals, and mature companionship?enduring qualities that highlight successful relationships.

Sex alone is not sufficient to carry a lasting partnership. You?ll also be able to tell in a lot of cases whether the man is genuinely interested in you or if he?s solely after sex or gratification of other motives. Once you have sex, it changes the dynamics, so it?s important to pace the relationship.

Why Authors Need to Think Local | Author Media

In It?s a Wonderful Life, everyone loved George Bailey, the ultimate hometown hero?but George didn?t realize it. He felt intimidated by his friends who had gone out of Bedford Falls and made names for themselves. George wasn?t inferior to them. He just thought he was.

Authors can fall into the same trap. It?s easy to get discouraged when your book doesn?t make the best-seller list or the Amazon top 100, (or even top 100,000)

In the day of the internet, it?s easy to forget the power of local.

As an author, you are a hometown hero, just like George Bailey.

Not everyone publishes a book. It doesn?t matter if you live in New York City, Deluth, or Twin Falls. There are many people in your community that dream of writing books and few that actually do. By default, you are set apart.

When it comes to marketing your book, don?t forget about your hometown.

Big names might seem impressive, but they don?t have the same lure as local.

  • Go local. Here are some ideas. ? Click to tweet.
  • Author Media has more ideas on how to sell you book. This time, think local. ? Click to tweet.

Here are some ways you can ?go local? when it comes to marketing your book:

Host a reading at:

  1. A local coffee shop ? partner with other authors to have a night of reading, or headline your own.
  2. A hospital ? remember the last time you were sitting in the hospital waiting room? Didn?t you want something, anything, to take your mind off medical issues?
  3. A retirement community ? these are communities of highly literate people that are often ignored. Don?t make that mistake. Many of them want to discover new authors to read but can?t get out to buy books.
  4. A rehabilitation center ? People need distractions. If you were stuck somewhere for an extended period of time, wouldn?t you want something to read? Choose wisely, for it isn?t always appropriate to go to a rehabilitation center. Respect their privacy.
  5. A local church ? does your book have religious themes? Does your local mega church have a bookstore? Leverage the connections you have. Someone?s books get into the bookstore. Why not yours?
  6. A locally owned bookstore ? In my hometown, this is Powell?s City of Books. While Borders is shutting down and Barnes and Noble is struggling, Powell?s has a robust business. They know the power of local. Find your local bookstore (or the local bookstore in the town your book is set in) and sell them on the community angle.
  7. The library (target the five closest to your home and the five closest to the setting of your book)

Teach a class at:

  1. The local community college ? think outside the box. You may not get your book in as core college curriculum, but you just may be able to teach a community education workshop on writing a book.
  2. The local high school ? again, the power of local. If you are comfortable speaking to students, ask an English teacher if you can discuss writing a book with students.
  3. The local community center ? these buildings aren?t just for sports and athletic activities. People in your community want to learn about the arts. Many of them want to write books. Give them a place to start!
  4. The senior center ? don?t discount writers because of their age.

Pitch YOUR story to:

  1. The local news station ? is there a ?Good Morning? show that broadcasts exclusively to your area? These shows are always looking for people to interview. While you are on the show, you can direct people to your website and give copies of your book away to the audience. ?It?s a great way to get your name out in the community.
  2. The newspaper
  3. The community paper
  4. The nearest examiner.com reporter
  5. The radio stations

What are some ways you can think local when it comes to your book?

Stem Cells Freak: Prostate cancer aggressiveness depends on stem ...

A collaborative team of researchers from various U.S. cancer centres has discovered, in a mouse model, that the aggressive or slow nature of prostate cancers is dependant on the stem cell type they initially originate from. Specifically, their study shows that cancers which develop in parts of the prostate that have luminal stem cells tend to be more aggressive than the ones developing in areas containing basal stem cells.

The prostate contains three types of epithelial cells, with two types of stem cells existing in two of those:

  • Basal stem cells?
  • Luminal stem cells.?
Previously published studies have found that solid prostate tumours usually arise from areas containing stem cells. In this study, the scientists examined and compared the aggression tendencies of prostate tumours originating from these exact locations. The reasoning behind the study was to assess whether or not a different origin source results in a more aggressive cancer.

During the experiments, the researchers first altered the androgen levels of mice, a known method for inducing prostate cancer. As mentioned before, they compared the aggressiveness of various tumours and discovered that the ones originating from areas containing luminal stem cells tended to be more aggressive and difficult to treat than those that originated from basal stem cells. Additionally, the researchers found that stressing stem cells via modulating androgen levels caused some of the basal cells to actually transform ?into luminal cells. Moreover, when tumours arose in them later, they were more aggressive, suggesting that there is still an unknown factor related to?luminal stem cells, leading to more aggressive tumours.

Now the researchers aim to reconfirm their findings in people. If they do, they believe that in the future a simple biopsy might be enough to offer doctors and patients information about the nature of a prostate tumour.

Prostate cancer is cancer that begins in the prostate,?a gland of the male reproductive system.?Prostate cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in men over the age of 75. Prostate cancer is rarely found in men younger than 40. Some common symptoms of prostate cancer are:

  • Slow urinary stream
  • Urine leakage, especially after urinating
  • Straining when urinating
  • Inability to empty out all of the urine
  • Blood in the urine and/or semen

Affiliate Marketing if you do not know what it is , or how you can work it succesfully tends to frighten and invoke feelings of confusion. In truth, there is no need for the term to evoke the feelings mentioned above. To promote better understanding of affiliate marketing, find below some ways that you can successfully promote you affiliate link

There are 2 reasons why people join affiliate programs, the first reason being obviously to make money depending on the compensation plan which is on offer. The second reason is maybe you want to save money on a personal purchase. When you join an affiliate program you are given a link which is unique to you, you then promote this link, and if you get a sale the product owner knows that the sale came from you, and then sends your share of the sale.

Find outlined below some ways to promote your affiliate website, you can choose to use 1 or indeed ALL of them. There are pros and cons to using each method, so a little caveat, do your due diligence to find which one best suits your personal circumstance.

1. Promote the URL. This is probably the simplest way to start earning with your affiliate link. As previously stated there are both positives and negatives for every method outlined. The advantage to promoting the link as you receive it is that you can start promoting the link straight away as is, you just copy the URL and you can promote it either online or offline. The disadvantage is that the link which you get is very bulky in appearance; it will include your affiliate ID number which is what differentiates you from all the other affiliates who are selling the same product. It simply does not look natural or professional and it is for this reason that some affiliates choose to take another route.

2. Purchase a domain name and have redirected. To do this, you will have to choose a keyword phrase which relates to the theme of the affiliate product you want to promote. For example if the niche product related to growing cactus trees, you could choose cactusgrower.com.You can register a domain name with a domain registration company like GoDaddy.com. Once you have your domain name registered you can then have it redirected to your affiliate URL. You can then promote your new domain name online or offline. Advantage it looks and feels professional and your customer can connect more with your business. Disadvantage, you have to be technically savvy for when problems arise.

3. Build your very own website to promote your affiliate banner. This is the method favoured by most internet marketers.Doing this will require you to register a domain name, Organise web hosting, in days gone by you would have had to build a website, but thanks to development in technology that is not the case anymore, with websites like blogger.com and WordPress. An advantage to doing it this way is that you are in total control of the entire process from finding the products, and choosing how you market your affiliate link or banner. The advantage of this is that it allows you to establish yourself online in whatever your niche may be, establishing yourself as an authority is a sure way to improve your sales. The major disadvantage is the sheer amount of work that you will be partaking setting things up, but don't let this discourage you as the results can be life changing.

4. Using Email marketing. This requires you to build your own email, doing this is a smart way to promote an affiliate product. Your list can be your biggest asset when treated properly and correctly.

It is also possible for you to advertise to other people's list. Whatever you choose to do you can promote your affiliate link via communicating and connecting with on your list, this is the most effective way to get sales.

These are some of the most common ways for you to promote your affiliate link. Using one or more of the methods outlined should see you on your way to making your first sale and beyond. It is a good idea to combine them and see your profits increase.

Manhunt for Vegas shooter widens to East Coast

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A manhunt has widened to southeastern U.S. states for a 26-year-old ex-convict identified as the prime suspect in a shooting and fiery crash that killed three last week on the Las Vegas Strip, police said Monday.

Ammar Harris used to live in South Carolina and Georgia, was convicted in Atlanta in 2005 of marijuana possession and was arrested in Miami in December on reckless driving and failure to produce a valid driver's license charges, according to public records.

"We have him identified," Las Vegas police Capt. Chris Jones said. "Now the focus is on locating and apprehending him. We're getting help all over the place."

Harris used the name Ammar Asim Faruq Harris when he was arrested last May in Las Vegas in a June 2010 case. He was charged with robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping and coercion with a weapon.

Las Vegas police also sought pandering by force and ex-felon in possession of concealed weapon charges stemming from allegations that Harris was a pimp and attacked a woman.

Court records show the case was dismissed last June. The prosecutor and public defender who handled the case didn't immediately respond to messages Monday.

In Miami Beach, Harris was arrested Dec. 7 after he was accused of driving a silver 2006 Hummer H3 the wrong way on a congested street at 2 a.m. The arresting officer said Harris produced a Florida state identification card, provided a Miami address and said he had been living in Florida for about a year. The status of the case in Miami-Dade courts was unclear Monday.

In Las Vegas, investigators say Harris was driving a black Range Rover SUV when he fired shots into a Maserati before dawn Thursday, killing an aspiring rapper and causing a crash that killed two people when a taxi exploded in a fireball at the heart of the Strip.

A SWAT team didn't find Harris at a Las Vegas apartment where he was believed to have been living after the SUV was found parked Saturday in the garage of a gated complex a couple of blocks east of the Strip.

The SUV had been sought as the getaway vehicle in the shooting and six-vehicle, chain-reaction crash on Las Vegas Boulevard near the Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Bally's and Flamingo resorts.

Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr. was mortally wounded when the dark gray Maserati he was driving was peppered by gunfire from the SUV. Taxi driver Michael Boldon, 62, of Las Vegas, and passenger Sandra Sutton-Wasmund, 48, of Maple Valley, Wash., died in the taxi.

Police say the triple homicide stemmed from an altercation between Cherry and Harris in a valet area of the upscale Aria resort a block south of the crash scene at Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road.

A passenger in the Maserati was wounded in the arm, and four people from four other vehicles were treated for non-life-threatening injuries after the crash.

Police released a photo of Harris taken after last year's arrest in Las Vegas in the prostitution case. It showed Harris with tattoos on his right cheek and words on his neck above an image that appeared to depict an owl with blackened eyes. Jones said Harris should be considered armed and dangerous.

Las Vegas police sought help during last week's search for the Range Rover from local and federal authorities in Nevada and neighboring states of Arizona, California and Utah.

Insight: Cancer drugs proving worth earlier in testing

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Michael Weitz was out of options. The Californian had endured chemotherapy, radiation and surgery but his lung cancer still spread to his bones and brain.

With time running out, the emergency room physician entered a Phase I study - the earliest stage of human testing for a new medicine - of crizotinib. The drug works for about 4 percent of advanced lung cancer patients with a mutated form of a protein called ALK.

"Once I knew that I had that mutation, I knew that I had an exciting new chance," said Weitz, now 55, who is cancer-free after three years of taking the drug now sold by Pfizer as Xalkori after an unusually swift development process.

It typically has taken a decade and $1 billion to bring a new treatment to market. But in the last two years a handful of cancer drugs - including Onyx Pharmaceutical Inc's Kyprolis for multiple myeloma, Roche's Zelboraf for melanoma, and Pfizer's Xalkori - were approved in about half that time because of improved genetic screening, more definitive Phase I trials and the dire need for new, effective treatments.

"We hope to be able to shave years off the time it takes to get final approval and save hundreds of millions of dollars per drug," said Robert Schneider, director of translational cancer research at New York University Cancer Institute. "We're going to see this as a sea change over the next five years."

Weitz's story is a dramatic example of how personalized medicine is advancing 10 years after researchers sequenced the human genome, enabling drugs to target specific genetic variations. The emerging trend is likely to bring more effective treatments to desperate patients faster, increase the number of annual drug approvals and cut research costs through earlier and more reliable data. It will also help drugmakers identify ineffective therapies sooner, although it may not necessarily lead to lower priced medicines.

There are some concerns about the faster approval process but most agree that the benefits of a potentially life-saving drug outweigh the risks. "The accelerated development of new drugs can be a double-edged sword," said Mace Rothenberg, head of oncology for Pfizer. "As you move more quickly some questions may be unanswered."

He said those answers can come from trials conducted after drugs are approved, and the Food and Drug Administration often requires post-marketing studies following expedited approvals

Historically, Phase I trials did little more than reveal the dose of an experimental drug that could safely be tolerated before larger studies determined clinically meaningful benefit. But advances in genetic screening and an improved understanding of the biology of cancer are enabling researchers to identify patients most likely to benefit from specific cancer treatments.

"You can see positive signals much more quickly, and clinically you can spare patients for whom the drug is not likely to work," said Dr. Michael Davies, assistant professor in the department of melanoma medical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Richard Scheller, head of research and early development for Roche's Genentech unit, which has produced most of the company's top-selling cancer medicines, said, "you can cut a couple of years out of the clinical trial process by basically doing your pivotal trial straight from Phase I."

Drugmakers who have benefited from the expedited approval process declined to discuss how much money was saved from the industry average for drug development.

FDA'S NEW "BREAKTHROUGH" DESIGNATION

With impressive enough early results, health regulators are more willing than ever to accept early or midstage trials as adequate proof of safety and effectiveness, rather than insisting on larger, more expensive and time-consuming pivotal Phase III studies that have been a standard requirement.

"The drugs are simply better," Dr. Richard Pazdur, director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said of the new targeted cancer medicines.

With older highly toxic chemotherapy drugs, he said, "many of the discussions we had at the agency dealt with whether we should approve the drug or not. With some of these newer drugs, the issue is how fast we can approve them, not whether they should be approved," Pazdur said.

The FDA has come up with a new breakthrough designation for drugs it views as a substantial improvement over existing therapies. With the designation - five have been awarded so far with 12 more drugs currently under consideration - the agency works more closely with drugmakers to identify approval requirements and work out commercial manufacturing issues.

DRAMATIC RESPONSE

Key to faster approval is that drugs are becoming more narrowly targeted as researchers better understand the pathways of cancer - a series of biochemical steps that fuel the growth of cancer cells. The aim of the treatments is to block the culprit proteins, or biomarkers, within a pathway.

"It's much easier for us to offer patients in Phase I studies the real possibility of a dramatic response," said Paul Sabbatini, an oncologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Now far fewer patients need to be tested in order to get definitive results in early trials because they are selected only if their tumors contain proteins or gene mutations that the experimental drug is targeting. Patients typically learn about these studies from their doctors or websites such as ClinicalTrials.gov.

"What we're looking at many times is Phase I data where we're seeing levels of response that we haven't seen before in patients that have exhausted most of the therapies in a disease," said FDA's Pazdur.

Scheller estimated that cancer researchers are working on 50 different targets that could yield effective future therapies.

NYU's Schneider, a co-founder of the biotech company ImClone, said historically perhaps only 3 percent of oncology drugs that began Phase I trials went on to be approved. With new diagnostic tools and targeted drugs, he said, "one would hope that 10 or even 15 percent of drugs might be approved for the right patient populations in the next five years."

Roche's Zelboraf and Pfizer's Xalkori both were developed along with companion diagnostic tests to identify the specific gene mutations in patients that the drugs were designed to target. They proceeded relatively rapidly through clinical trials.

The company said development of Zelboraf, which costs $56,000 for a six-month course of treatment, was the fastest conducted by Genentech and Roche. The clinical trial process took less than five years.

Pfizer's Xalkori took just over four years to develop. Had it been tested in the traditional manner among the general lung cancer population rather than on those with the specific ALK mutation, it would likely have been dismissed as a failure or required further research to try to glean which subgroup of patients were helped by the drug that costs $115,000 a year.

FINDING FAILURES FASTER

In the past, large pharmaceutical companies were reluctant to develop drugs for limited patient groups, preferring to search for medicines to treat ailments such as high cholesterol and arthritis that could be taken by a large swath of the population and become huge money-makers.

Pfizer Chief Executive Ian Read has embraced the newer personalized approach. Noting recent advances in genetic understanding, Read said: "We can get clearer results earlier. That will clearly speed up our development, as you saw with Xalkori."

The recent advances may also grant a long-held wish of drugmakers - identifying failed drugs faster.

"It's much better to find that out in Phase I than half a billion dollars later in Phase III," Genentech's Scheller said.

"If you have a targeted therapy and you don't see activity in your first 10 or 20 patients that have your particular diagnostic marker or particular biomarker that you're looking for, forget it, we're through, project ends," Scheller said.

Even with all the recent successes, many hurdles remain. Researchers have yet to figure out why drugs that work by spurring the immune system to fight cancer, such as Bristol-Myers Squibb's Yervoy, have long-lasting effects on some patients and not others. And they need to figure out why cancer often comes back even when targeted therapies worked.

"We need to know why these drugs stop working sometimes," said Sloan Kettering's Sabbatini. "If we understand the cause, we could preemptively combine drugs, or at the first sign of (disease) progression, understand what is the most logical next step as we learn more about the pathways."

But as long as the United States does not have price controls for medicines as Europe does, and the FDA does not consider economics in its approval decisions, quicker, less expensive development may not translate into lower prices.

"I would hope it would bring down the cost of drugs, but whatever the market bears is what the market will get," Schneider said.

His agent, Bruce Tollner, confirmed the diagnosis in an email to The Associated Press on Monday. ESPN first reported the story Sunday night. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer, File)

(AP) ? Top draft prospect Star Lotulelei will undergo more extensive heart tests when he returns to Utah.

Doctors at the NFL's annual scouting combine in Indianapolis found the star defensive tackle and likely high pick has a heart condition, Lotulelei's agent, Bruce Tollner, confirmed in a series of emails with The Associated Press on Monday.

Tollner said Lotulelei would not take questions regarding the diagnosis yet. But the 6-foot-2, 311-pound defensive tackle still plans to do a full workout in front of scouts at his regularly scheduled Pro Day on March 20. The Tonga native was scheduled to fly to Utah on Monday night, Tollner said.

ESPN first reported Lotulelei has a left ventricle that is not operating at maximum capacity.

Lotulelei's professional future could depend heavily on what doctors find.

The Utah standout is considered one of the best prospects in this year's draft. He is trying to join Alex Smith as the only players from the University of Utah to go No. 1 overall; San Francisco took Smith with the top pick in 2005.

"You're going to have to get all kinds of second and third opinions," Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said.

When asked whether the Cardinals would remove Lotulelei from their draft board if those doctors confirmed the diagnosis, Arians said: "That's exactly what would happen."

Uncovering information like this is the reason the combine actually began in the late 1980s. Coaches and general managers have said for years that medical checks are a crucial component of the combine, perhaps the most important data they get all week so they can make informed decisions on draft weekend.

"The No. 1 reason that this started was for medical reasons, and you bring everybody here and have a chance to look at 300-plus guys, X-rays, MRIs, and get your hands on those guys," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Thursday. "Each step along the way it added a little bit more, whether it was physical testing, or mental testing, or interview process. Nothing stands alone. You're not going to draft a guy based on a 15-minute interview at the combine, or based on one attempt at a broad jump at the combine. It's all just part of the big picture."

This is not the first time a big-name player has been diagnosed with an illness or injury at the combine.

In 2009, doctors found a small stress fracture in the left foot of receiver Michael Crabtree. Crabtree was still chosen No. 10 overall by San Francisco and had a breakout season in 2012.

It's also not unusual for doctors to send players with medical questions from Lucas Oil Stadium, where the combine is held, to a nearby hospital for more extensive examination. The shuttles certainly have been full this week.

Among those hoping to prove they will be healthy enough to play this season are running back Marcus Lattimore, trying to return from last fall's gruesome knee injury, and top-rated cornerback Dee Milliner, who said he will undergo surgery next month for a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

The NFL future of three players ? defensive lineman Walter Stewart, linebacker Jarvis Jones and defensive back D.J. Hayden ? will depend heavily on what doctors tell teams. Stewart and Jones were both diagnosed with congenital spinal conditions and were told to give up football. Both were later cleared to return to the sport. Hayden said he tore the main artery to his heart in a practice collision in November.

But teams already knew about those conditions before coming to the combine. Lotulelei's situation came as a major surprise.

Arians said he was "shocked" that the problem had not been detected before now.

Finding a potential ailment in a player with aspirations of going No. 1 is certainly not the norm, though it is not unprecedented. In 2011, defensive end Da'Quan Bowers came to the combine projected to go No. 1, but during a medical recheck, doctors found signs of potential long-term arthritis and some weakness in his surgically repaired right knee. Bowers wound up sliding out of the first round and wasn't selected until No. 51 overall by Tampa Bay.

This time, though, it's different.

"We're talking about a heart," Arians said. "That's huge. We're not talking about a knee or a shoulder."

Steam Buns While You Boil Hot Dogs

If you ever find yourself boiling hot dogs on the stove, put that steam to work heating and softening your buns.

Steam Buns While You Boil Hot Dogs

While spiral cutting hot dogs and grilling them might yield the best results, boiling dogs is a fine alternative when it's too cold to grill outdoors, and the steam from the pot is great for warming up your buns. All you have to do is rest a strainer or upside-down straining pot lid on top of the pot, and set the buns inside for a few seconds.

AMD Turbo Dock tech boosts performance of docked Windows convertible laptops

amd-turbo-dock-convertible-laptop-tablet-windows

While the jury's still out as to whether users will embrace the new convertible laptops that have launched with the debut of Windows 8, AMD is betting that its new Turbo Dock technology can help improve the computing experience whether you're using one in tablet mode or as a traditional notebook.

The chip company says its new feature, to be showcased in devices unveiled at next week's Mobile World Congress 2013, addresses the fact that the hybrid device performs similarly whether it's in laptop or tablet mode, even if you are doing wildly different tasks. To remedy this situation, Turbo Dock will speed up the accelerated processing unit (APU) of the unit when its docked in its keyboard, while drawing less power when it's being used as a tablet.

The innovation will be baked into AMD's new "Temash" chip for tablets and hybrid devices, which will also be on display at MWC 2013. It will counter Intel's current Ivy Bridge processors being used in Windows 8 mobile PCs, as well as the forthcoming Haswell chips. Like Intel, AMD is playing catch-up in the tablet processor space, but hopes its long-time association with traditional Windows desktops and laptops will help it break into the market via the new form factors based around Windows 8.

The Turbo Dock feature is a nice selling point -- especially if it works well in real-world testing -- that marries internal performance to external usage, but will anyone be buying? That's not a question unique to AMD and its new Temash platform. To spur the adoption of touchscreen Windows 8 systems, including the convertible laptops Turbo Dock is designed to work with, Microsoft and Best Buy are planning a $100 discount program starting this Sunday.?

We'll see what types of devices Turbo Dock will launch with as MWC 2013 kicks into gear next week, so stay tuned.
