An Interview with Book Blogger, Jenny | The Gatekeepers Post

GATEKEEPERS POST STAFF The Gatekeepers Post is the leading social media book publishing community on the web....More

Today we interviewed Jenny of Take Me Away,?a blog that offers in-depth book reviews for those looking to find a good read. Whether you?re an author looking to pitch a book or an avid book blogger fan, Jenny talks to us about some of her favorite books as well as what it takes to grab her attention when submitting a book to be reviewed.

What do you typically look for when seeking new books to read?

I read all types of books so it?s hard to describe any one thing that I look for. I go with what my mood is at the time. Sometimes I?m in the mood for something light, sometimes I want a thinker, etc. I get a lot of my recommendations from other book bloggers. The excitement for a good book is contagious, and I often can?t help running out and buying a book just based on those recommendations. There are also certain bloggers who have such similar taste to mine that I know for sure if they love something, I will too!

What types of books do you wish people would send you?

Well, I mainly prefer that I not be sent books outside my preferred genres.? Every once in a while I?ll receive a book or a review request for a sci-fi or fantasy book, and it clearly says on my blog that I don?t read those.? In those cases, I assume that the book/request went out to everyone since it is not relevant to my blog.? On the other hand, I can?t blame people for asking?just in case.? So for what I wish people to send me? pretty much anything that is of the genres I like ? contemporary, literary, or women?s fiction or mystery/thrillers.

As a book reviewer with limited time on your hands, how do you go about selecting titles from the suggestions sent to you? What?s a good way to catch your eye to ensure a review?

My reading moods change frequently so it?s hard to decide ahead of time what I want to read.? Because I do have limited time, I try to choose books to read that I feel super excited about and want to read RIGHT AWAY.? Clearly, I can?t read every book right away, so if it?s a book I don?t have that feeling about, then chances are I won?t get to it for a while.? I tend to like books that have some sort of ?issue? that I am probably going to want to talk about in addition to the book.? I?m a social worker and therapist, so books (fiction or non) that bring up any kind of human rights or human interests topic is usually of interest to me as are books about relationship dynamics (be it in a couple, in a family, etc).? In terms of ensuring a review, I am more inclined to read a book if I receive it a month or two before the publication date.? One the publication date passes, I start to feel discouraged if I haven?t gotten to it yet and then I?ll move on to another one I know I can get done in time for a review right around the publication date.? Oh, also, if you look at my blog you?ll see a link at the top called ?New York Shelf?? I adore books that take place in NYC, so that ALWAYS catches my eye!

What were some of your favorite books this past year?

Oh, I already have so many books I?ve loved!? Some of these were published years prior but I just read all of these this year: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick, Bossypants by Tina Fey, The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown, Bent Road by Lori Roy, and Leaving Atlanta by Tayari Jones.
