The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City Awards Grant to Parents as Teachers National Center to Expand Childhood Obesity Prevention Project

St. Louis (PRWEB) February 21, 2008

The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City has awarded a grant to Parents as Teachers National Center, an award-winning parent education program serving families with children from birth to age 5. The $ 41,786 expansion grant will support efforts to extend the Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative, initially piloted in 2007, to include the Kansas counties of Allen, Johnson and Sugar Baby Kansas Wyandotte Kansas City.

The award will be used to train 230 Parents as Teachers parent educators and other early childhood professionals to deliver nutrition and fitness information to parents of very young children to help them teach their children about healthy eating and instilling good exercise habits. The expansion grant will also support the development of a companion curriculum to the Nutrition and Fitness of Young Children Curriculum focusing on the nutritional requirements, feeding behaviors and fitness issues of children age 3 to 5 years. This is an expansion of the original curriculum for children ages birth to age 5.

?Childhood obesity is an epidemic in this country,? stated Susan Stepleton, National Center president and chief operating officer. ?Parents are a major part of turning the tide on this critical health issue and learning good habits early in life is important. We are very grateful to the Foundation for their partnership with Parents as Teachers to address the health of very young children in the Kansas City region.?

The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City strives to improve access and quality of health for the medically indigent and underserved individuals and communities by providing financial support and leadership directed toward all aspects of health in Kansas City, Missouri and a six county service area (Missouri: Cass, Jackson, Lafayette Counties; Kansas: Allen, Johnson, Sugar Baby Kansas Wyandotte Kansas City Counties).
