First shotgun advice - Martial Arts Planet

Debated putting this in the "shooting sports" thread in weapons, but I thought I'd stick it here for more traffic. I recently started shooting trap, and I currently borrow a gun from the club when I shoot (right now been borrowing a very-well-used BT-99). Trying to figure out what shotgun to get as my first shotgun. Likely uses:

Trap shooting (75% emphasis, some local competition)
Skeet shooting (10% emphasis, just recreational)
Hunting (5-10% emphasis, probably a couple small trips with a coworker)
Home defense (my wife will train in it too; I'd feel better if she knew how to use it when I'm away on work trips)

At a shotgun enthusiasts forum, people are definitely pushing for a dedicated trap gun if I plan to compete in trap...but the over/under trap-oriented guns are prohibitively expensive (most over $2,000) and even a single-shot BT-99 isn't cheap (and single-shot is useless for anything but shooting single trap). I'd much prefer to keep it under $1,000 if possible. Cost is definitely making me consider a pump-action instead, but the added complexity of a pump for sport competition isn't ideal, and it's also a longer learning curve for my wife. Also, I need a bottom-eject pump because I'm a lefty and my wife's a righty. Was hoping for some advice here.

I was mulling over a Browning BPS pump ($650 for a field model, $800 for a trap model), a Winchester 101 O/U ($1,000 for a field model; the trap model is prohibitively expensive), and anything else that people may think is a good idea. Ergonomically the Winchester felt right the first time I shouldered it; wasn't so sure about the BPS but I don't have much experience with pumps in general.

So...what should I get?
