Beating Blood Cancers One Mile at a Time with the Leukemia and ...

This is a sponsored post written on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Cancer. ?It?s something that happens to someone else. ?You never imagine that it could touch your life, your family, your home. ?Until it does. ?And blood cancers are a disease that are effecting lives everywhere. ?Even mine.

You see, my grandmother died from Lymphoma when I was two years old. ?I?ve grown up with stories of how much she wanted a grand-daughter. ?How much she would have loved me. ?How I look exactly like her. ?But here?s the thing ? I grew up without her. ?I never had her braid my hair. ? We never sat down for tea parties with my dolls. ?In fact, I don?t even remember her. ?Yes, I?ve seen her picture and heard stories but I don?t have one single memory of my own of her. ?Lymphoma robbed me of that.

When you personally know what you?ve lost to a blood cancer like Lymphoma, it makes the fight personal. ?It makes you want to fight back somehow ? to take out this disease that robbed you of so much more than memories. ?It makes you want to prevent someone else from having to wonder ?What if I?d known her??

And this desire to find a world without blood cancers led me to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. ?They are the world?s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancers with a?mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin?s disease and myeloma, and improve the?quality of life of patients and their families. ?They fund lifesaving research and have invested nearly 1 billion dollars since 1954 to help find a world without blood cancers.

But this brought me to the question of how can I get involved? ?What can I do to make a difference. ?And those of you who know much about me know that I?m all about getting out and going instead of waiting for a cure to be found. ?And one way I can do this is through exercise! ?Not only does it help me keep myself strong but it helps me to give back as well. ?Because, you see, Team in Training, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s flagship fundraising campaign also just happens to be the world?s largest and most successful sports endurance training program!

Founded by Bruce Cleveland, Team in Training was started as a way to help him get past the feelings of helplessness and fear he felt after his daughter?s diagnosis with blood cancer. ?Now, 25 years later?TNT has trained more than 570,000 people and?helped LLS invest more than $875 million in research to discover and deliver breakthrough?cancer treatments that are saving lives today.

But Team in Training is not just made of people who have lost loved ones. ?It?s formed from family members of those who are fighting and even survivors of blood cancer. ?It consists of a group of people coming together and training to beat a disease and remember those who have not. ?And Team in Training participants are all over the world! ?Because as part of the Team in Training program, participant have a choice of more than 200 accredited national and local events in the US and abroad that they can participate in. ?In exchange for raising funds in conjunction with Team in Training, they receive four to five months of personalized training by TNT-Certified Professional Coaches ? ensuring that they are ready to take on their event one mile at a time!

Through this program, Team in Training uses the impact of physical activity to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s research and helps make a positive impact on both blood cancer patients and their families! ?After finding out about this program, I?m inspired to participate in my grandmother?s honor! ?And I?m inspired to help fight these diseases! ?To find your inspiration and get involved today, click here.

So, why should you get involved today? ?Why does it matter? ?Well, I?ll tell you! ?While research from organizations like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society have made great steps in the fight against blood cancers, these is still more to be done! ?Currently, about half of blood cancer patients do not survive, making research to fight these diseases essential. ?And while the most common form of childhood leukemia now has a 90% survival rate, there are still 10% of children who are losing this fight. ?For me that is heartbreaking.

So, for those children; for grown-ups too; join me in this fight. ?Don?t stand by and watch while another mother loses her child. ?Don?t do nothing while a little girl never gets to know her grandmother. ?Instead, join this battle today! ?There is so much YOU can do! ?And your involvement could be the one that makes the difference!
