Telstra to cut 260 back-office jobs, some sent offshore to India

Updated July 09, 2013 18:57:45

Telstra has announced that around 260 back-office jobs will go this financial year, with most of them to be sent offshore to India.

The jobs will go from offices in all capital cities in the company's Network Applications and Services (NAS) business, but no regional positions will be affected.

In a statement, a Telstra spokeswoman said around 170 positions would be sent to India if a plan to build new "delivery centres" there went ahead.

"Part of the NAS growth strategy is to expand into international markets, particularly the Asia-Pacific region," the spokeswoman said.

"Discussions are currently underway regarding the?establishment of delivery centres in conjunction with industry partners located in India.

"This proposal, if implemented, would involve outsourcing of non-customer facing functions and services to industry partners ? resulting in the reduction of around 170 existing roles."

Telstra also plans to cut the jobs of about 90 contractors in the department.

But it says NAS hired nearly 150 new workers in Australia last financial year, and 350 new positions would be added this year in other parts of the team.

"We will consult and work closely with our people?on this proposal and take our responsibility to support them through this process very seriously," the spokeswoman said.

"We absolutely understand the impact this will have on our staff."

A separate restructure across the company announced in May is still continuing, but Telstra has not yet announced the details of any job cuts that may result from that review.
